Dusties

I'm practicing flying between 12 and 14h00...yesterday I counted 2 dust devils within 20mins. I was about 2-300 ft agl and one extended quite high, both were about 150-250m away. I remember a while ago there was a thread on this

I had a bit of turbs even at my height (slight propwash feel) when it crossed my path below.

The symptoms during flight were no wind to slight (5mph) tail wind then 5miles later headwind, ie the wind was changing all the time but mostly no wind.

Who has hit one and what were the consequences? What to do and look out for

Wasn't there a guy at the Vaal recently that crashed as a result of a dusy?

You flying 3-axis, no problemos. If you are slaaaaaiitly overloaded, you actually seek a "dusty" to help you up. A dusty signald an upward air sream. The bigger the dust, the faster and higher you go up. NOT recomend catching a dusty at less than about 400' up. THAT can be A. VERY bumpy, or B, scare the seven different colours of crap out of you.
In my gliding days I was glad to see dusty`s. Now I am not so keen anymore to be bumped around. :D
