3 February 2007

Took Deon van der Westhuizen for his first microflip today. He is hooked. 6 motorised paragliders in the air this morning. Caught up with them at the wind generators, then went over Perdeberg and stopped at Wintervogel. The coast was foggy, and visibility not great today. Frans and Jan Grotepas were at Morningstar, and impressed us with their trikes, and BMW engines.

Overcast but I am not the only one who needed my fix. RON, Bob, Zirk, Francois from FAMS and some from FAWF also in the air. Great flying but not great sightseeing.

Expanded Francois' patch a bit more. Will I be able to persuade him to go with me to the Eastern Cape?

Took fairing off & flew without. Quite a different feeling, and a bit of a "pain" in the neck with a helmet.

Are dolphin sightings of blouberg common? I saw an estimated 10-15 in a pod about 500m offshore at the beginning of February

Yes, I used to live in Blouberg (before the housing complexes started to shoot up) and we used to see 100s of Dolphins around this time of the year, and whales later in the year - a bit further in. A couple of weeks ago I saw a docile whale just north to the harbour.

Wednesday 28 February 2007

Francois and myself planned an early Morning to Piketberg, Aurora and back. Just after takeoff it is clear that my pigtail antenna is going to upset the blikkes, so we land at Wintervogel to put it on an extension, which works fine. Then a stop at Moorreesburg, where we decide to see whether the tailwind blows us over Piketberg. Flew along the Piketberg, and looked at the farms on the berg, as well as the NDB Dome (KK on Aeronautical maps). Then descend from 4500ft to land in Aurora. We first walked through the town where I showed Francois the house I recently bought. Aurora is a small town with about 300 people, no crime, and a runway. The plans are to build a big hangar (with another pilot in town), and I hear Johan Froneman also wants in. After breakfast we took off for the coast, and were thrown around so much that we decided over Dwarskersbos to head straight for Saldanha. Langebaan ATC told us to stay at 1000 feet, and I had the most bumpy flight in a long time against a headwind of 20mph coming over the hills. Johan Froneman showed us his brand new Raven (Francois is thinking to go that way!). Also at Saldanha we met Gerhard Nel, the Chief ATC at Langebaan, who phoned them and told/requested a windless altitude on our flip towards home. Saw some whales from 2000ft, stayed there until the descend for Morningstar, where we had, well, Morningstar Style landings in a crosswind of about 20knots.

A great day! Now I think Francois is ready for the mountains.

Wednesday 14 March 2007

Woke up at a reasonable 07h30 and thought I had missed the good weather but drove out to FAMS anyway. As I got there Francois had just taken off, and by the time I got in the air the southerly was making things interesting as I got to Philidelphia (where I wanted to take a pic of Johan's place). Then I heard CDG at Altona, so did a circuit and a fullstop, talked some nonsence. Off to FAWF, touch and go before returning to FAMS. Fitted my Camcorder to the wing, but no wide angle lens so the result was a demonstration of what the flexwing does on takeoff.

Bacardi, bru. Log sorted, but wait there's more.....

Francois SMSed me and said he is staying in bed, the wind is blowing at Blouberg. After some harch words he turned up at FAMS at 6:30 and we took off at 7:00. What a glorious, wonderful, magnificent, splendid day of flying.

See http://www.zu-dve.com for today's log

But wait, there's more, now with every log seen, a brand new video. Simply send your credit card details.....no, never mind, simply click on the video link and see how Francois deals with that westerly on that dastardly Morningstar.
