Warmbaths

Postby DieselFan » Fri Feb 16, 2007 9:34 am

Within the next few weeks I need to make a trip to Warmbaths or more specifically past Mabula Lodge to a place called Leeupoort. The closest runway I know of is Mabalingwe. I know of two routes to get there one via Thabazimbi road and the other from Warmbaths.

I'm tempted to fly instead of drive? Anyone have a route from Microland and / or suggestions? To my knowledge my Gauteng map runs a tad short...Google earth tracks / paths would be awesome? As well as the restriced airspaces etc.

Diesel,

We did the trip last year with Mervin, so chat to him, but as far as I know the only bit of radio work is from overhead Mamelodi to the power station, chatting to Wonderboom. Stay West of the N1 past whalmanstal military area, that is about it as far as I know.

Airfields are plenty, Buy Jan Coetzee's book on Microlight Airfields in SA. It is for sale from Fanie at Microland.

Hope it helps. It is a nice flight! :D

Leeupoort

Postby SIQ » Fri Feb 16, 2007 12:14 pm

DF,

If Leeupoort is a little mining community just north? of Mabalingwe then I am sure their is a long grass runway just next to the small golf course. I think there is also a hangar. I was there last year Nov and did a low fly past of the runway that were in good condition.

Haven't been there in years 8+. It's a reserve of sorts whereby people have houses and animals roam around. It's on the road linking Warmbaths to Thabazimbi. I don't recall a golf course...

Don't know if it's north of Maba, on the same road tho. If there's a strip nearby that'd be BEST.

How's the weather generally? ie if I flew in on Saturday morning and back Sunday morning weather is generally stable out there?

Just thinking about luggage - I don't need a change of clothes, softness was actually quite open minded to even consider flying there?!

Lately wherever we need to go by car, I'm thinking if we can't rather fly there, always wanted to show middle finger to tollroads

Need to practice my Ultracity flyinns for Berg trips

Hi DF,

The only Leeupoort I could find is south of Rooiberg on the Warmb. - Mabula Road - to Thaba. There is an airfield at Rooiberg which is 9m north of Leeupoort.

Rooiberg/Leeupoort
S 24 46.0
E 027 45.0
Elev 3811

Freq 124.8

Rwy 04/22 900m grass

Hope it is the right place

Weather

Postby SIQ » Fri Feb 16, 2007 2:55 pm

I must say that I have been fortunate when going in that direction that the weather was always perfect. You sould get a good indication by Friday of weather for Sa and Su but it is definately do-able. Why don't you join the ERMF group to Kunkuru (Just west of Mabilingwe) from 23 -25 Feb?

Hi Roy, note that Leeukop is 9m south of Rooiberg and not as mentioned previuously. Having a look at Google Earth there is a "Leeupoort Holiday Town" to the west of the town with an airfield just to the west. No information on airfield is available 24°55'13.56"S 27°36'45.98"E

see link for easyplan map, Cheers Sias
