In-line facet fuel pump - installed

Have fitted an electronic facet fuel pump in-line for some extra “belts & braces” although it was a bit of an interest factor as well.

Used a 60mm stainless ‘U’ Bolt mounted low on the pylon meaning that the pump is primed all the time. Also installed an independent electrical circuit with own fuse and switch.

Idea is to use it in tight take-off spots or as the need may arise. Heard of too many stories of fuel starvation. Come to think of it, we have almost two of everything on our trikes but only one fuel pump.

Total cost < R 350.

Tested for 35 minutes this morning - 100% :!:

Interesting ! I think it is a good idea to have the booster pump, it can get you out of tight spot.

What model/pressure pump did you use? Is it in-line with the normal pump? Where did you buy it?

It is something I would like to add to my Streak Shadow.

Just make sure you use the correct pump! There are two common models of the Facet pump, the 'high pressure' and 'high flow' versions. I can't remember which one is which, but I think the high pressure one shouldn't be used with carburetors, as it can overpower the float needle, and flood the engine...

Hi guys,

The facet pump is low pressure 3 psi or approx. 0.1 bar. When the carb bowls are full, a definite change in the pump’s noise is heard – it almost switches off. Priming the carbs is now a very easy operation.

The facet pump is free flow in one direction only and is capable of priming itself up to 1 vertical metre.

The fuel flow is --> tank –-> facet pump –-> in-line fuel filter (0.3mm) –-> diaphragm pump –-> carbs. Remember, the in-line fuel filter is not for the fuel pump/s, but rather for the carb jets. There is also a 0.3mm filter on the fuel pick up pipe in the tank (safety wired etc.) meaning that in any event, the facet pump is post-filter.

I decided to fit the facet pump in series because;

• The existing diaphragm pump is unrestricted (butterflies can be opened easily) with low pressure applied from the tank side.
• A parallel fitting would require too much plumbing, one-way valves etc.

Except for the 60mm stainless ‘U’ Bolt, bought the lot from Solo Wings.

Both Dave at Solo Wings and my AP are satisfied that it is the correct pump. My trike’s log book has been duly updated and signed-off by the AP.

• Fuel hose 1m & 4 x clamps
• Twin 6 amp wire – 3m
• Battery terminals and spade terminals for connector
• 10 amp fuse & fuse holder
• Facet fuel pump
• 60mm stainless ‘U’ bolt with 4 x washers and lock nuts
• Switch for mounting under the pilot’s seat with On / Off backing plate
• Assorted cable ties

I put one into my old windlass, absolutely brilliant to prime the fuel lines before start-up, and then the added piece of mind for take offs, landings and low flying and when you are on a general KSP...

Many people told me that it wasnt needed and that the normal mechanical pumps never fail, but you need to remember that the mechanical pump is relaint on pressure variations which initaiated by one itsy bitsy rubber hose and clamps....rubber goes, pump goes!!

Also nice to know that if the fuel filter picked up some serious nu nu`s, the positivly charged fuel lines might make the differance betweeen flying home and walking home.


Another pro: if you measure the vertical hight from an almost empty snoopy tank (eg 10 liters or less) to the height of the carbs, you get some idea how hard the mechanical pump needs to work to lift the fuel (almost half a meter)........ no problem with an electrical pump!!

You cant go wrong putting one in place, my next mistress will definately get one installed!! :twisted:

Hiya John, I have one on the HKS, as I have to fit one due to motor design. Without question the best product available. However I have also used a HUCO which is also very good kit. Just check the types they all look the same but there are "at tank mounting" and "at carb mtg".

Folks,

Facet pumps have kept me in the air with various aircraft - never missed a beat.

All DTA's are fitted with a Facet pump installed inline on the tank side of the filter.

All of the DTA aircraft are now fitted with a Racor Marine Filter and Gascolator to remove any moisture. This little unit has replaced the need for a curtiss valve at the bottom of the tank.
