Where/How does one start.

Hi Guys,
I am CT based and am new to this Microlight interest. :D Where does one start? What does it cost to get a license, where do you get one? where do you nest the bird, what is the hanger fees? how long does it take. :?

Is buying 2nd hand a good option, what is the maintenance cost?

I have millions of questions, don't even know if I can afford it. :oops:

Shall one visit a club and hang around, to get all the info?

Some of you guys fly REALLY high? (Looks a bit scarey (**) )

Sorry for all the fishing ($$) but it looks great.

You start by doing axactly what you have done, posting on this forum. Now someone from your area will undoubtedly drag you along for a flip and you will be hooked :shock: . Run now!!!!!!

Hi Croc

I suggest you contact Aerosport at Fisantekraal. Speak to Louis Van Wyk 021 9753891. The school offers 3 axis as well as trike training (and more).
Just get started and the questions about what to buy, etc will answer themselves. Louis will be happy to book you for a demo.

I have just bought a new cubby. Based at fisantekraal. Will be able to take you for a ride in about 10 days if you want to try 3 axis. Pics on this site under 'my new toy'.
It is people that make flying complicated!

Hi Croc

From my own experience, go for a demo flight to see whether you actually like the idea, if you do, go for a medical to make sure that you can fly and then select the type of aircraft you would like to fly and go for it.

One word of caution though, try to base yourself as close as possible to your home to avoid travelling only to find out that the weather has turned ugly.

Ya, the medical. I started my training and only went for the medical later. I passed!

It is a good idea to go for it before you do training though because you get hooked so hard and if you found out you are unfit to fly halfway through it could be very depressing!

Go for flips with the guys in your valley and decide what type you like best - weight shift of 3-axis, each has its own characteristics and you need to decide what you like best.

I am a born weightshifter but thinking to do my PPL so I can fly anything and everything!

I'm with DH on this one. I went the PPL route first, but for my flying budget and current plans weight shift is the way to go. It is also far better if you are after scenic flying. If you have a meeting to attend and get somewhere quicker go 3 axis..........or GT-450 :idea:

Croc, don't do it.

Serious, you'll develop some serious impulsive compulsive behaviour disorders.

Firstly, you develop an annoying stare at the sky as someone is trying to hold your attention.

You inherit terrible ratty tantrums, some believe if you don't fly after a couple of days.

You prance around with a serious " I got it all this morning" grin when you do.

You lower moral standards by making unheard - of allowances, just to be able to fly.

You quite blatantly leave a jol early and almost sober by saying "I'm gonna go fly tomorrow morning by 05h00".

You're distracted at work, paying too much attention on a certain online forum instead of doing what you're paid to do.

I believe those okes from the mountain booze and party far too much, setting a bad example. :twisted:
