What Oil in Rotax 912?

Postby CloudDancer » Sat Jan 06, 2007 4:54 pm

Hi, would appreciate your advice on which brand and viscosity you guys use in the 912.

Full synthetic automotive, or is a mineral oil like the automotive Shell Helix 20W-50 Yellow Can suitable, or is it better to use the Helix Plus (semi-syn)or Ultra (full-syn)?

I like Shell Products, but suppose the Castrol Magnatec or the new Castrol Edge should be fine as well.

Thanks for the help.

Hi CloudDancer,

Rotax recommends a "motorcycle oil of a registered brand with gear additives." See Rotax manual.

A suitable oil would be Shell Advance, for 4 Stroke Motorcycles. It is a semi synthetic oil. Be Aware, you get Shell Advance for 4 Stroke as well as 2 Stroke motors. You must get the 4 Stroke oil. This is very important!!

Shell Helix is not suitable, as it does not have gear additives the gearbox needs. The gearbox is lubricated by the engine oil, like with motorbikes.
