I went to an outdoor expo in Franschhoek and it would have been a perfect place for a static display and someone handing out pamphlets!! I believe there are heaps of these types of shows this time of year. Maybe con some of the organisers to hold the show at an airfield... big open streches of grass, hangars for indoor stalls and a runway for displays.

Maybe market microlighting as entry level aviation.

I love what I read BUT one thing must be clear when a field is chosen for this the accesabilty for the public must be easy, they must not have to drive foreever to get there.

The day can only be a success if the public is there.

Outback fields are a no no.

Some instructors and manufacturers had a display area at the dome last year during the Getaway Outdoor expo. Problem was, they spent the least amount of money and thus got the cr@piest site in the dome!

Right at the end and with very poor lighting!

If I did not know they were there I would never have found them and I would be surprised if any business came from that exercise. When I found the display there was not even someone to chat to. Only a few pamphlets for a well known Gauteng School!

Not sure if they did it agian this year, but I guess not!

The Paraglider guys on the other hand had a bright display, music, young enthusiastic guys on hand to tell you all about the sport etc, etc. You had to almost queue to get some info, cost more I am sure but money far better spent in my opinion.

Maybe it is time Microlighting is marketed as an adventure sport and not as a club where pipe smoking men with home knitted sweaters and 70's style haircuts hang out. Because reality is that is the image many people have in my experience. :?

Posted this on another thread.

" I think it's time that we have an air eviation exhibit.

NTCA, (exept the jets, ....OK why not) 3 days long, under roof, manned by all the agents, covering every plane, trike, gyro, mechanic/ wing add ons, training schools, radio, gps, intercom and helmets, books and maps, the works. at an airfield.

We can drink and braai and the CAA, MISASA and SAGPA stalls, let the air magazines invite their advertisers to share displays / running videos e.t.c. on fly aways, the oppertunities are endless.

We as the consumer, should be able to see / touch / test and decide which radio, flight suit and headsets we would like on our new / upgrade pride n' joy.

Lets cut around this sole supplier / preferred supplier cr@p and make up our own minds.

I'm still learning from my " What is your best price?" negociations. Being from the platteland and finally making a trip to Midrand, I was so dissapointed by the tired "We don't stock but I can order it for you" cr@p.

To me, this makes an awesome oppertunity to get the smaller / less known suppliers on the same platform.

And for the 'agent' putting it together, serious bucks.

Now what better way is there to get everone together for a dop 'n chop? "

Seriously, this is big business. Either get people like Exhibition Management Services interested e.t.c. They do these things full time i.e. Home Makers Fair Show, Decorex e.t.c.

I have exhibited at both these shows and can tell you it's a massive operation and to pull it off, at least 3 months fulltime work. but, letting out a 9 square metre cubicle @ R10 000.00 to over a hundred exhibitors and collecting R40. per head from the public is big bucks.

But on a smaller scale, where would one find an airfield with enough under cover availability, central enough to attract thousands of visitors, enough to make it pay to get the exhibitors and flying enthusiasts from Natal, Eastern Cape and maybe overseas e.t.c. ?

Certainly, this will give the industry a kick up the arse.

Why not use part of the Kyalami track as a runway during one of the outdoor/getaway/big shot exhibitions....... then give the public opportunity for introflights :?: As far as i recall it falls within the Spec Rules area and isnt controlled airspace... :?:
