HIRTH MOTOR

Postby Hazzard » Sat Oct 07, 2006 6:22 pm

Please would someone give me some info on the 100Hp 3 cyllinder fuel injected 2 stroke. Is it a good option for a 3 axis plane, or is it better suited to a trike etc etc. How does it perform against the Rotax 912s, (price differences accepted), given that they are both 100hp.
Thanks,

A guy at our airfield has one installed into a RANS S10. Because it is fuel injected he now can fly fully inverted without any problems. He does a lot or aerobatics with the plane.

As far as the engine goes, he has done 50 to 60 hours without issues except for the rubber coupling in the gear box shearing off. This turned out to be a manufacturing fault and this item is a standard used by all manufacturers, so it was not a Hirth problem

Here is a pic of the plane

From your question I gather that you have not yet decided what plane to buy. What do you have in mind?

Hirth

Postby Boet » Sat Oct 07, 2006 10:01 pm

Bushy in Kroonstad has a 110hp 4 cyl Hirth F30 engine he wants to sell. I test-flew his Bushbaby behind that monster. What a combination! The F30 engine is a bit shaky while idling. His learned friends convinced him that the engine mount rubbers was too soft, the engine shakes so much, the petrol "foams" in the carburettors. The bloody thing has floatless carberettors....... Anyway proceeded to replace nice soft engine mount rubbers with not so nice HARD rubbers, to steady the engine, and keep it from shaking when it is idling. Something else had to give. The engine mount eventually gave up the ghost...........And eventually he took the Hirth out, and I transplanted a 582. If you can live with a bit of a shaky idle, go for it! I can remember that this engine was silky smooth at cruise settings, and the BB climbed like a fart out of a bath! Was a bit of a mission, to fit the engine under the BB`s cowl without too many "power bulges". :D

Thanks for the info. The reason I asked was the a chap asked me if it could be fitted in to the Savage range of aircraft, (J 3 cub clone). I sell the Savage so have had a few engine alternatives asked of me, but never the 100hp Hirth, so thanks to all.
Cheers
