Towing with CKL

Postby Tobie de Beer » Tue Oct 03, 2006 10:39 am

After some requests that I put up a bit about aerotowing ITO pictures and movies I start this thread.

Unfortunately I can't seem to upload videos :-(

Some of you may ask what is that other person doing on the runway: He indicates to the tug pilot to take up tention and to go to tow ( By means of hand signals )

Quick question...... why does a hang glider not require the same king post and luf lines as a microlight? or can you just not see them in the pictures?

It is what we call a kingpostless glider. ( or Topless )
The crossbar is very stong an made from carbon fibre to ba able to handle negative loads (-4g) and the luv lines is replaced by divesticks inside the wing. It is all about the efficiency of the wing. The glider will propably do somewhere around 1:14 glide.
So yes the kingpost and luv lines is taken away, but their funtionality remains.

What are specs on Tug. (eng wing prop etc) How does the tow rope work? Can you release the "cargo" if they get out of hand like with real gliding setup?

Vid's on the upload 4megs....

Just above the brake pedal is a second pedal - The release pedal!

It runs a cable going through the hollow outputshaft of the prop with a three ring release at the end. There is a bearing in the centre of the prop to have the pro running around the release mechanism leaving the release mechanism not spiniing but taking up any side forces.

The line also has two 'weak' links and finally the HG pilot can also release

If I remember correctly the wing is about 17m^2 - single surface with a 582 engine. It is the Wizard wing from Airborne. - used on the RedBack See www.airborne.com.au.

P.S. sorry for the short cryptic replies!
