Ok, guys...
I have a question...
A mate of mine (from Finland / UK) told me that you only pay for "flying time" when you hire an aircraft.
I think he must either be wrong, or it's like that in the UK... I dunno...
The question is this: Surely, if you want to go to a "cabin in the woods" and sleep over two nights, but it's only two hours flying away, an owner (or school) would not let you pay for only 4 hours, although you were away for three days?
How does this work? How is "flying time" and "away time" broken down?
Or can't you hire like that?
And - can one hire and fly Microlights (trikes)?
Also - if someone owns an aircraft, but NOT a CPL, can he/she rent out their aircraft without problems?
Stan...

Hire & fly based on Hobbs or Tacho time. Usually if you gonna sleep away from base there is a min hrly charge pre day. So you go to log cabin hideaway 2 hrs flying away, you would be charged 4 hrs if there is no min daily charge.
Most of the bliks I H&F'd had a 2 hr a day min, so if you go to the cabin for 10 days you would pay for min 20 hrs...
Don't know about the ML's, but bliks to H&F are plenty, Nice ones are scarce and expensive, but there are some...

INSURANCE is the big issue. If small number of pilots better to get them put on license. Cheaper and less hassel. H&F is way many start out. I did it for almost 8 years until the dead time (min charges) got too high and I was paying 2-3 times more per hr due to away time...

Cessnas and other "real" planes. You also have "flying garden furnature" such as trikes and "plastic/tupperware" (composites) such as the Jabaroo and Jora.

Hi Stan,
Yes, you can also hire and fly trikes and other microlights. Training schools like Fisantekraal (Aerosport) and others in the W/C have aeries available for this(trikes and bushbabies). Normally you have to be a club member or otherwise pay the insurance excess cover where applicable.
Same normally applies for the blik aeries (PPL). Good hunting.
