BMW Engine on Savannah VG
BMW Engine on Savannah VG
Hi Everyone
Does anyone know of a Oribi / Savannah flying in SA with a BMW engine?
I am researching for a friend, the possibility of replacing the existing Rotax 582 in his Oribi with a BMW engine. Any comments suggestions will be appreciated.
Regards
Pierre

Pierre,
I am not aware of a BMW in your requested configuration, but I have a BMW on my trike. It's the way to go.
Welcome to refer your mate to me for further comments.
Cheers

I would also be very interested in this as a project, will it require a complete cylinder head re build and twin spark ignition? or will it be possible to leave it in the OEM configuration? and how does one get it through the red tape associated with RAASA and CAA approvals

Hi Guys
Unfortunately we will not go ahead with this project. The 912S won in the end

But for the rest of the forum users, maybe I should start a separate thread under "Members Projects" of my BMW trike-build on a Pegasus Quantum undercarriage and Jenya topless wing.
Only reason I did not do a Member's Project page before, was that several people were convinced that it could not work.
Oupa-G, Fred Blokland and others have proved that BMW does work. I managed to get it to work to perfection, thanks to them and the crucial Take-off gearbox.
I am short of 100 hours under BMW power over the past 18 months on my trike, and I am not looking back, ever again.
In fact, I started a 2nd BMW project and it should fly trials by December. Your idea of a BMW (100 hp) powered Aquilla should work just fine. Several pilots have Rotax 912's (80 hp) in a similar Aquilla configuration as yours, and have proved that it works very well.
Plenty horses, low rev's, low fuel consumption, and a dealer around the corner who will service it at a fraction of the cost.

Kloot, what sort of cost is involved ? I have the notion of fitting one of our new MK2 Cubby aircraft with a BMW.

Re: BMW Engine on Savannah VG
Jean, if you only get the gearbox from Take-off, which is a proven must have, it will cost you R 37 000.00 landed.Jean Crous wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2017 7:58 pmKloot, what sort of cost is involved ? I have the notion of fitting one of our new MK2 Cubby aircraft with a BMW.

Complete engine, gearbox and wiring loom probably now in the region of R 160k - 180k.
But you can pick up local second hand engines for a lot less and bolt the gearbox onto it.
We are busy with a second project and were very lucky to pay R 18 000 for a complete engine, harness, ecu and throttle bodies. But a more realistic market price should be about 35k - 55k depending on kilometres.
