Gavin when I covered my VP2 wings I did the same on the 1st wing but the 2nd I used cap strips about 20mm wide glued to the ribs and then glued the material to it after stretching.
Are you going to stay with the barn door design ailerons or are you going to make them smaller

Hi Willie
I am staying with the barn doors, i then only need one inch of movement on the stick to get her rolling, and i am going to keep her just for that sunday afternoon flight to blow the stress outa the mind before the next week starts. I already have plans to build another aircraft also of wood but more of a long distance aircraft for those flyin's on the other side of the country. I was thinking of the cap strips but decided on going the rib stitching route as i might want to do a wing over or two and this is really going to be a work hoarse more than a fun flyer.

Can you explain pse ?Tailspin wrote: I was thinking of the cap strips but decided on going the rib stitching route as i might want to do a wing over or two and this is really going to be a work hoarse more than a fun flyer.
Cap strips vs rib stitching? One can do wingover other cannot ? Why

Cheers ian
Hi Ian
It is not a case of one can and one cannot it is more a case of how safe do i feel with the method used to keep the material on my wing frame, with cap strips it is only held on by the glue and nothing else
so if the glue fails the material could pull free of the frame and need i say more.
With rib stitching the material is actually sewen to the frame so the attatchment is alot stronger (in THEORY
) but also it helps with the pucker factor. When doing some menouvers the pressure exerted on the wing is greater and well if i get into that sort of evelope i at least want to feel safe in the fact that i know the material is going no where !

Don't stress, just DO IT as the plans ask for, use the right materials, use test patches, and get your AP to check it out and it all will be fine! It is when you move away from the tried and tested that you are on your own...
I have often found myself in the same predicament, best advice I got, just think how many have been in the same boat as you before, done it the same way your are doing now, and it all came out fine!
Well done, looks good.
Regards
Rudi

Hi Rudi
The AP checked it and was happy with everything before i did the last glueing so he is happy. Still that is 4 years work and it is just starting to become a reality what exactly i have accomplished.
Just really freaky
