The winglets actually do several things. They add side surface to the aircraft which helps keep the trike more stable in turbulence. They also help keep the nose pointed straight and keep torque steer down some. Another benefit is they tend to decrease the effect of the wingtip vortice on the wings surface. This keeps the airflow somewhat cleaner making the outer third of the wing a more effective aerofoil. The net effect is the wing tends to generate lift as if it had a larger surface area, but you don't get the added drag and can therefore carry more speed. In essence, the wing performs as if it had a longer span, without the drag. The only real drawback that I have found is the wing is slightly heavier in roll with them, but only very slight.
The other explanation is that they're just cool......
Plus they make a pretty cool place to put lights.

In light of recent events, I am just very interested to know how these winglets change the handling of the wing. For example, does the pilot feel any differance in the handeling when taking off/landing in a crosswind?

Are there any noteworthy handling differences before and after fitting the winglets?

P.S. I am a fixed wing pilot & not a trike pilot so explain slowly

"The winglets refine longitudinal stability that is especially noticeable in straight flights at high speeds. The Profi TL with winglets is more stable in spirals, as sliding reduces. The winglets enable to perform well-defined turns and changing of bank angle. Though one may argue that winglets stability makes turns a bit harder, it doesn’t affect neither stall characteristics nor wing performance at the maximum flight speed. The maximum flight speed with the winglets increase, the wing equipped with the winglets flies 5 – 10km/h faster"

I speak from experience when the first winglets came out for hang gliders. I had my wing for about a year before winglets came out.

The most noticable effect was the neutral position of the control bar. With the winglets fitted in neutral flight, the control bar was 50mm back compared to neutral flight without winglets. In simple terms this means that the wingtips are producing more lift (or, for that matter, less drag) with winglets. Less drag = economy or higher speeds.

Other noticable effects were no yawing anymore at high speed and a slightly lower stall speed, or for a better description, more manuevrability at slow speeds.
I also cannot recall that crosswinds had any detrimental effect on take-off or landing.
