RV 12's list refers:
1) Over the last 5 years on how many occassions has someone used the First Aid kit "in anger".
2) If they want it signed then so be it.
3) Common sense.
4) That's a new one. More future confusion.
5) Surprised the a/c passed it's ATF.
6) If it keeps them happy then do it.
7) Keep insurance docs in a/c, that's another new one. Difficult to do if not insured.
Reflective strips ? For night time or what? See no purpose for any strips unless you are doing Trans - Kalahari. Again, how
many times has anyone used these things in the last ten years?

It is time the bureaucrats moved away from this " one size fits all " mentality and let the different disciplines work out
what is best suited to their needs. We don't need babysitters who are under the misguided impression that they are the
only ones who are capable of running the affairs of aviation.

Proof of 3rd party insurance is required for the issue of an ATF - so it would be difficult to own an NTCA without insurance.

Signal strips are used by day (mostly) and are used for providing standardised visual signalling for SAR. I have had to use them once while hiking - and they are really useful in remote areas. I have 3 space blankets in my first aid kit. Cost R45 for all 3. Weigh virtually nothing. Take minimal space. Meet all the requirements for signal strips. And make a handy emergency shelter when necessary. Why not just pack some and make the CAA happy too?

Hi John,

on form CA24-04 (annual inspection) there is a block that asks for date of expiry of third party insurance. I don't know if it is a requirement, but it asks it on this form. If I am not mistaken, my PFA document also states that I should have 3rd party insurance (I'd have to check to confirm this)

Justin, with regards to the signal strips, is there a specific requirement or will space blankets work as you can cut it to smaller strips for use?

The insurance is an interesting one. There is nothing in the CATS/CARS, but it is added as a requirement on the ATF. You also need to sign that you have insurance on the ATF application forms.

For signal strips, this is what the regs say:

Ground-air visual signal code for use by survivors
No. Message Code symbol
1 Require assistance V
2 Require medical assistance X
3 No or Negative N
4 Yes or Affirmative Y
5 Proceeding in this direction ↑

Note – Symbols shall be at least 2.5 metres long and shall be made as conspicuous as possible.

Because it says so on the form does not mean it is compulsory...
If the aircraft is used in an ATO (training or commercial purpose then yes!)

I was wrong in surmising this as it was always in the Civil Aviation Act of SA and not in the CARS.

Trespass, nuisance, responsibility for damage and insurance for damage or loss by registered owners and operators of aircraft.—(1) No action lies in respect of trespass or in respect of nuisance, by reason only of the flight of aircraft over any property at a height, which, having regard to wind, weather and other circumstances of the case, is reasonable, or the ordinary incidents of such flight, so long as this Act, the Convention and the Transit Agreement are duly complied with.

(2) Where material damage or loss is caused by—
(a)an aircraft in flight, taking off or landing;
(b)any person in any such aircraft; or
(c)any article falling from any such aircraft,

to any person or property on land or water, damages may be recovered from the registered owner of the aircraft in respect of such damage or loss, without proof of negligence or intention or other cause of action as though such damage or loss had been caused by his or her wilful act, neglect or default.

(3) Subsection (2) does not apply where the damage or loss was caused by or contributed to by the negligence or wilful act of the person by whom it was suffered.

(4) Where any damages recovered from or paid by the registered owner of an aircraft under this section arose from damage or loss caused by the wrongful or negligent action or omission of any person other than the registered owner or some person in his or her employment, the registered owner is entitled to recover from that person the amount of such damages.

(5) A registered owner or operator of an aircraft must have insurance as prescribed for any damage or loss that is caused by an aircraft to any person or property on land or water.

Why can't I just use toilet paper torn in strips ?

If they do not specify a type then I would also think that toilet paper would be a good solution, unless its raining off course when trying to use it...

We got "nailed" this morning and this is what they found :

1. Verify Contents of first aid kit & Update (old first aid kit)
2. Always Sign LICENSE NO on the flight Folio
3. Always include FUEL UPLIFT on flight folio
4. We need a sticker at the fuel cap that’s says UNLEADED / MOGAS 95 and AVGAS ONLY
5. We need a METAL PLATE in the aerie saying ZU-*** for identification porposes.
6. Replace Compass SWING card to a readable one
7. Keep insurance docs in our aircraft folder
8. Reflective strips required as part of our kit.

Number 5 - had it made on a dogtag yesterday for R100.....
