Perhaps costs with breakdowns will assist people from a real world perspective. I hate talking money, but it is ban for your buck! Knowing what people are spending is a real guide to a suitable route in aviation for budgets with various constraints. The variables in value like performance/perceived reliability and the price to pay for those would build a picture with many answers that would suit individual needs. Best of luck, I look forward to reading!

may i suggest using two divided sections for this -

New aircraft -- usually too expensive

Used Aircraft - in this day and age plenty good bargains on young aeries -- this is mostly going to the the most popular of the two.

Just my 2C: Up to about R250k, the Zenair 601 is probably the most underrated aerie around.
Will fly good with VW and better with Rotax. Easy to fly and land. Good in turbulence and a 44"
cockpit.

In that same budget, there is also little to compare with the Jab SP470 if you can get a nice one.
It will fly at 90knots using about 12 lph.

If you can go to R600k or so, the Savannah range is the best all rounder- allbeit a bit slow. There
are few aeries around that are so easy to fly and land. It will lift what can fit into it and can land anywhere.
It is also so popular - seldom any for sale.

If you have more money- Sling. ##

for R450K ill buy a Zlin A142C -- side by side, full aerobatic - not as fast you would like but 95knots aint toooooo bad.

best thing about it - NO ROTAX!!!! (^^) (^^) (^^) (^^)

Well sadly for me not much "bang for your buck" when it comes to trikes....but I would definitely put the Apollo Deltajet 582 right up near the top of the pile! It's not much more expensive than a STD Aquilla....so it definitely gets my vote. (!!)

This was Hendrik Loots one before he sold it....sadly she was destroyed in a hanger fire last year. :(

I really miss this aerie at FABA. (^^)

I wont vote on 3 axis as I have no experience on them but I will say that the Explorer TD is one of the nicest locally made planes I've seen.

Not sure if there are any in SA yet....and have no idea what they cost, but the Bobber has got Ubercool (!!) (!!) (!!) written all over it! I'd love to own one one day when I'm big.... vhpy Love the tandem seating and exposed fuselage! Back to basics type of flying....awesome.

Why is the Carl Babst Raven not in the list. It is local, it is cheap and it is VERY good value for money...! I completed my built now and it is brand new for under R350k.. And that includes a lot of "nice-to-haves"... It can be built with a 582 also, decreasing the cost even more..! (I had a 582 version and now a 912ULS)

More than 70 flying in South Africa. I think it deserves a spot...

Talk to Carl Babst in George. He manufacture these and the kits are cheap.

This is an all aluminium aircraft, very stable and flies very easy. It is a copy of the Zodiac 601 HD and I think Carl also gives the option for the speedwing, similar to the HDS.

Specs are with 912 80HP:

Empty weight: 280kg
MAUW: 540kg
Stall: 45mhp
Cruise: +-90mhp
Rate of Climb: +-800fpm at sea level

I personally enjoy this aircraft, hence my second one..

If the pilot weighs less than 95kgs and bucks are an issue, there can be no doubt the Bantam B22J is the best entry level fixed wing. For R180 K you can get a nice one. Keep in mind they are type certified at manufacture in New Zealand. This implies a more stringent level of design safety standard.Even at altitude these little babies perform just fine at MAUW.
