Mozambique - wanting to arrange fly in

I am not sure about the CAA regulations with regards to trailering trikes and then what type of authority required to get airborne however I will go and see them and get the list of requirements. Did you have any hassles at the boarder post?

In the application for clearance you have to give a detailed flight plan. In this I indicated my intention to trailer in and start my flying in Bilene. They approved the flight plan with some minor changes. I had no hassels at the border post. I just declared everything. The officials did not know what was on the trailer. Is it a parachute? was one comment.

As I have not trailered in to Maputo International it would be great if you could ask them what is required and where I can rig my Trike. I need some lawn/soft surface area. Also, can we securely park our cars/trailer and how much will parking cost per day? Also, what is FQMA's taxes for a microlight?

Gavin, I do not know what you require but I still have the forms that I used to get clearance and all the Moz Aeroclub and Military contact numbers and names. Do you need them?

I seem to have the right guys in my "hands" with regards to CAA and the military.

I have the list of requirements for normal flight, however I will get the info with regards to trailering.

Will you be trailering just till Maputo and then fly to Bilene or trailer up to Bilene?

There is place to rig up at both Maputo and Bilene. Cars we can make a plan with, if in Maputo we can leave so at my yard or house and if in Bilene then that won't be a problem.


What dates should we make this for????

Secondly, I believe Bilene will be the best option as there is a lot more areas to fly around, I could maybe get customs and Imigration to be there, which will avoid Maputo (best plan if we can get it right). I am sure we can also negotiate better rates for Bilene.

All we need now is a better idea on dates.

I'm busy working on the cost and requirements.

Hi Mozfly, my plan was to trailer to Maputo and then fly from there.

What about this agenda/flight plan:

Saturday 5 April - Arrive Maputo, rig and sleep over.
Sunday 6 April - fly to Bilene and stay at Complexo Palmeiras or Casa Do Sol
Monday 7 April - Bilene
Tuesday 8 April - Bilene
Wednesday 9 April - Inhaca Island and stay at Manico Camp 150 meters from airport
Thurday 10 April - Inhaca Island
Friday 11 April - Inhaca Island
Saturday 12 April - Maputo, derig and sleep over
Sunday 13 April - Home

Brilliant idea!

We make it a week fly in, for those who don't want to join in for the full week can either join in on the Bilene weekend or the weekend we at Inhaca and can book accordingly!

I think we should stick to that agenda you laid out and hopefully the rest can fall in with that.

Ok, so I need to complete the pamphlet and then the list of requirements and costs.

I will Chat to CAA with regards to trailering and see what support they can offer with customs at the boarder for those who want to trailer.

I will also speak to the Airports company and see what they can assist us on with regards to better landing fees.

If you had to guess, what numbers if aircrafts do you think we can attract? 10, 20, 30?

Regarding the dates. I want to avoid School holidays and long weekends....during those times it is difficult to get accomodation and it costs twice as much and it is family time for most. Also, in April / May the weather is good in Mozambique and it is till nice and warm. That is why I suggested the dates from 5 to 13 April. Unfortunately the tides will not be so good (neap tide is on 8 April and spring tide is on 15 April). So we will be in Inhaca when the tides are better

The route would be:

FABA - FAMB = 60 miles
FAMB - FAKN = 90 miles
FAKN - FQMA = 86 miles
FQMA - FQBI = 53 miles

Alternatives are:

For FAMB Alt = FAWI
For FAKN Alt = Kwena dam

For the Gauteng pilots the meeting point would be FAMB and FAKN for the rest. If there are pilots from KZN they best cross border at Porta Do Ouro, FQPO and then meet up at FQMA.

I suggest a sleep over in Maputo and then early morning depart for Bilene.

I will meet up at FQMA or FQBI depending on whether there is a sleep over or not.

Mozfly, the border was a non event when trailering through. They regard the Trike as registered lugage. It is like taking a boat or jetski across the border. When you start flying is when they regard it as an aircraft and you need all the clearances.

We are having our monthly braai at Microland this weekend and I will ask around to see who else is interested.

Mozfly and other interested pilots.

I have just spoken to Kevin Storie from our Aeroclub and he says:

1) If you intend to fly accross the border you have to land at Kruger Mapumalanga International & Maputo International to clear customs. They are geared to do this. Basically the last airport you land at before crossing the border must have customs facilities and they must clear you. If you can make it from Lanceria or Wonderboom you can clear customes there and fly non stop to Maputo.
2) The Mozambique Aeroclub is complaining that a lot of pilots do not stick to the flight plan which they submitted for clearance. This is jeopardising future GA flight approvals.
3) If you trailer accross, just make sure you declare your Microlight on the temporary export permit and make sure an official stamps the permit as checked.

Mozambique is an awsome place to fly and we must do everything not to jeopardise this opportunity for our fellow pilots.

Thanks Jon for the sleep over offer. If we could have cleared customs at your strip I would have taken you up on your offer. That would only leave Maputo and maybe it could be aranged that we clear in Bilene.
