Advice for buying a Trike

Postby cornell » Tue Jun 20, 2006 2:51 pm

My friend is interested in buying a Trike think he wants to cross over to the Dark side (joke for you sensitive types). Can anyone steer me in the right direction where to look.

Thanks

New or second hand :?:

If new look at Solo Wings, or Rainbow etc in the Aircraft Agents and Manufacturers forum

Alternatively look in the Aircraft for sale section

He would need to know what budget he has, what does he want to do, i.e. fly just around the patch or longer distance. Will he be carrying passengers a lot or not

Tell him to stay away from those PM trikes - I hear there is a registration problem with them especially the GT450

How's that going by the way Demon? Serious now!

Thanks for the replies guys. As I don't know anything about a microlight and the licence I feel useless to answer my friends questions. He's got between R60 000 and R50 000. Would like a weight shift with dual ignition basic instruments Rotax 503 should be fine bigger would be better. How many hours is it for your licence an how much would a instructor cost you an hour on average. We from Ladysmith so in the Gauteng or KZN area will be better.

He was on the website last night but could not get hold of one of the guys trying to sell as his phone number got one digit missing.

Thanks

You should get a nice trike for that price

Training wise talk to Fairy Flycatcher she is online and in Durban. Probably closer than Gauteng. Not sure of other schools closer to you. Look in the Microlight Clubs, Training Schools and Flight Centres forum on this site.

You should expect a minimum of 25 hours(usually more depending on how long you take to go solo), of which 10 to 15 will be dual another 15 solo hours with cross country flights as well. There is also ground school. Look at a minimum of R15K for your licence if you use the schools plane and less if you use your own. (the R15K is based on 25 hours and should include ground school) An hourly rate of about R450 to R500 is the norm on trikes I believe (this includes plane, instructor and fuel)

He will also need to get a grade 4 flight medical - I would suggest he do this before spending too much money just in case there is a medical reason that will prevent him flying.

If you can't phone the guy try clicking on the pm or email button and sending them a message.
