Had a wonderful morning flying - glad the winter is almost here, now I can take-off at a more reasonable time (for a Cape Townian that is 10h00) and enjoy a long smooth flip. And the days are getting crisp and clear.

I did some enjin failure on take-off practice [no wind so did it on both 02/20, one after other], and confirmed that I can make a complete and safe return to my takeoff point if the failure occurs at 600ft AGL. My question is, since it is usual practice (for me) to hold in the bar to build up airspeed once airborne, and knowing that I will only be able to turn back once at 600ft AGL, does it not make sense to get that altitude as soon as possible, ie - watch airspeed and go for maximum climb rate of approx 1000ft/min?

What do the instructors here say?

Hi Gert,

did you practice the engine failure with the motor still idling, or did you stop the prop?

Regards,

Thanks Gert,

You really made Jacques' day if not year. This is what I love about the microlighting community, we are not the selfish elitest idiots that some people think the aviation industry is.

Fortunately today I had the opportunity to take Morne's gorgeous girlfriend for a birthday flip. So I also got the share a bit.

BTW didn't go to Oudtshoorn, the weather is turning foul tommorow.

See http://www.zu-dve.com for enlarged copy of today's log. Windy (again), and stormy weather predicted for the weekend. Did a touch and go at Delta200, where others sometimes complain of windshear. Maybe I was lucky today.

Sunday 7th May. Keith, Morne and me (with passenger Di) flew with the esteemed (and soon to be married) chairman of the WCMC, Zirk (with Zanie) in a "formation of four" to Hermanus. Soon his radiocalls mentioned a "loose formation of four". A great day - with a very bumpy leg back over Franchoek Mountains when I descended too early and got to do some aerobatics courtesy of the downdraft.

See http://www.zu-dve.com for the enlarged log, as well as a lot of pictures.

Great weather in Western Cape at the moment - 27C at 100ft, and no bumps. Had a bit of a north-westerly this morning, about 20mph at 2000ft.

I have relocated to Morningstar, saving me 70 minutes driving whenever i go flying. Went to Morningstar for a short flip this morning, but once in the air I heard DFK from FAWF, and went to FAWF. There some spectators were waiting for Trygve and his passenger (who was getting his 60s birthday present, and intro flight). Of course could not resist offering a flip.
