582 inner crank seals leaking

Postby Loco » Wed Jan 02, 2013 1:46 pm

Hi guys

Been told my 582's inner crank seals are leaking :(

Does one have to replace the whole crank or can one replace these locally?

Thanks
Ant

After flying about 1.5 hours the rotary valve oil reservoir drops between 15-20mm (from the top arrow to just under the cable tie that keeps the reservoir in place)

Can I still fly the aerie like this as long as I keep topping up the reservoir before each flight or is it unsafe?

Speak to Alex. He'll help, but I'd advise to stay grounded until he can have a proper look.
Sorry to hear you got an oil leak :(

Thanks Noel I did speak to Alex...

Also spoke to Gerrie (Duck Rogers) and oom Hans @ ML it seems that it's OK to fly the aerie like this as long as I keep it topped up before each flight

Anybody else flying like this?

At least I can fly while I save up for a new crank shaft (R15,000 eina!!! :()

It just seems wrong that I have to "buy a new car because the tyre is flat"

The crank is 180 hours old and within spec but now needs replacing!?!?!?

Sounds more like the seal on the rotary valve shaft has gone and not the seal on the crank. this would allow the oil to seep into the crankcase and be burnt off (Seal Part No 16). Had a simmilar problem but mine was on the waterpump side of the rotary valve shaft (Seal No 12) allowing water to seep into the oil. I might be wrong but it might be worth finding out before splashing out R15k on a new crank! (**) (**)

Many thanks! I'm getting Alex Rudd to come check for a 2'nd opinion this Saturday I really really hope it's just the rotary valve shaft seal...... :(
