Rotax 582 sudden stoppage ?

Postby Jean Crous » Wed Oct 03, 2012 9:09 pm

The aircraft mentioned in the accidents and incidents thread, has come to my facility for repair. Part of the excercise is , ofcourse, to establish the cause of this accident. According to the PIC and co-pilot, there was a lot of heavy static just before the motor cut out. The PIC said it was "as if someone had turned the mags off" , that is how sudden the stoppage was. On arrival at my w/shop we turned the motor with the mags on, and there was spark with both mags......now the puzzelling questions start. Can it be coil breakdown, or a stator problem ? Has anyone got some advice as to where the most likely place would be to start looking ? BTW there were NO fuel related problems at all.
Regards
Jean Crous.

It's unlikely to be a coil breakdown as both coils would have to quit simultaneously for the engine to die (dual ignition)
I would start looking for the chafed magneto wires that shorted to earth (or the faulty mag switch) causing the "mags to be turned off" and then you'll also find the source of the static.
Magneto stator coil would be last place I'd go looking

And don't rule out a cold seizure if its a silvertop 582. Better check the pistons and sleeves for scoring........
Don't know what the static noise will have to do with a cold seizure though unless it was just coincidental

Gerrie, nee hierdie een is n Blue Top. But that being said, we will still look for signs of cold seize, although the pilot said at least 5-7 min spent on run up and taxi before t-off. vhpy
