582 Silvertop - Need advise pls

Postby Aeroman » Sun Oct 28, 2012 10:53 am

Hi, I'm thinking of buying an airie with a 582 silvertop, needs 300hrs service. Can anyone tell me what needs to be done on this service? Is it necessary so replace the crank?
Does any one know the price on a new crank? And how much it would cost to the improvements on the head for the cooling prob and so forth?

Any Silvertop owners/flyers that can tell me more please? :?

Hi Aeroman, I cannot confirm the current maintenance schedule requirtements as far as CAA is concerned, but irrespective of that, a silver top that has only done 300 hours has not been flown very frequently, and one of the biggest enemies of engines is prolonged periods of non use, where corrosion is able to set in.

A good local AP who knows Rotax 2 stroke engines will be your best bet, but I suggest that you should make peace with a complete strip down of the engine - with replacement of the crank and most moving parts You cannot buy peace of mind flying over inhospitable country, wondering whether you made the right choice to save some money by taking a chance :)

I agree with Dobbs.

Though not a guarantee that you have to replace the crank. But most def the engine needs to be opened and inspected. I recently went through the whole 300hr crank/decoke story. Not sure where you are situated but I can highly recommend Air o craft services based at Petit close to Bapsfontein
