Don't think they thought of the Jet Stream or maybe it was just a small oversight.

I think they are talking about take off - or wind speed on the ground.
But good luck to him - hope he get's it right.

Howdy Gav,

Yeah - if the 2 mph applies on the ground, consider ground effect, wind shear at altitude and most definitely HUGE wind sheer when entering and exiting the Jet Stream.

Apparently, he has 19 maneuvers to execute when bailing out and seeking to break the sound barrier through a 115,000 free fall.

I have not been on the site to discover exactly what this guy is trying to achieve & how he intends to do this.
Listening to an interview on the radio with a Gent called Digby who had ejected from an aircraft at altitude (he doesn't fly any more!) he mentioned some factors of this challenge that got me thinking:

Firstly if he is trying to break the sound barrier I understand this changes according to the same factors that affect us (temp, air density etc).
So
1) He jumps out into minus XXX degrees C but gets toasted as there is min atmosphere there & the sun wants to roast him.
2) He is in a very low pressure environment (his suit needs to be pressurised so its like the Oros man trying to tie his shoelaces)
3) As there is min air up there how does he control his speed as there is no friction to slow him down.
4) Then he has the vertical and horizontal wind shears as well as the speeds in the jet steams.
5) He has a warm up phase as air density increases.
6) He needs to loose at that high speed energy & slow down to deploy a parachute.

6) And his plan B if things start to go wrong is?

I can't see this working out as planned - but then we thought the earth was flat & our solar system ended at Pluto until a while ago.

Agreed!! But why go to 128,000 feet and then pull the chute a minute early, missing the freefall record??

His planned freefall was estimated to be between 5:30 and 6:00, but he pulled the chute at 4:30, or thereabouts.

Let's wait for the commentary.

After flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters (128,100 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. Felix reached a maximum of speed of 1,342.8 km/h (833mph) through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.
