Garmin 196 & EasyPlan?

Postby BeanCounter » Thu Sep 20, 2012 12:24 pm

Hi

I'm struggling to get a Garmin 196 and Easyplan connected. I've basically gone through the list of ports and none of them are working.
Any advice, please?

Thanks

I got a 196 and did not know that you could load easyplan, would also be interested to know if it is possible.

Ek vind weer Easyplan baie gebruiker vriendelik. Jy kan waypoints na 196 oplaai, net nie routes. So skep jou waypoints op Easyplan, laai op na 196 en skep net jou routes op 196.
Ek sal bietjie by die huis kyk wat my setup is op die 196 en laat weet.

Hi All

I must say i have done all of the above to a GPS196.
Route, Waypoints, and all the alternates info everything. (Just battling with the maps)

Your biggest problem is getting the GPS to talk to the computer through the USB port(Basically impossible) BUT i have a docing station that has a Serial port on it. Works like a charm.

Just done the whole NUMBI trip onto my GPS and s023 s023 s023

It is possible trust me. (yes i am in I.T. )

You cannot load Easyplan onto the 196 (or any Garmin for that matter) but you can transfer waypoints and routes from Easyplan to the GPS. You can get it to work with a RS232 (serial) to USB converter but it is far easier to use a serial port if you can find a PC or laptop with one.

I must say that even though I use Easyplan I find it far easier and quicker to create the route on Mapsource (Garmin's free mapping software) and then transfer it to the Garmin. The whole process only takes seconds. I have a database, in Garmin/Mapsource format, that covers most runways in South Africa, more than 900 of them that can be loaded into Mapsource and use for routing or uploading. I use Easyplan primary to get runway and frequency info that you cannot get from Mapsource. For longer trips I print out the Easyplan "summary" and use it during the flight.

Once I have completed the flight it is quick to download the track from the gps into Mapsource and display it there or with one click in Google Earth, great to see where, and how accurate, you flew. You can even see the track in 3D (including altitude) on Google Earth.

Fly safe,
Rudi

Thanks for the advice guys. I got it working (through the USB port, nogal) with the help of an IT colleague and it's only going to cost me a intro-flip. (^^)
