Saldanha to Rhino Park

Postby Rudix » Wed Sep 19, 2012 6:51 pm

My plans are slowly taking shape for the ferry flight of KR2 ZU-CGR I am planning from Saldanha to Rhino Park.

I have not made a final decision on the route, the two basic options are via Upington, a distance of 881 miles or via Beaufort West, a distance of 861 or 873 miles depending if I refuel at Gariep or New Tempe (Bloemfontein)

I would prefer the maximum leg length to be between 2 and 3 hours. At a conservative economy cruise of 130 mph that is around 260 to 390 miles. The plane burns around 20 lph and carries 80l of fuel so even a 3 hour leg would not be a problem.

Fuel is available in more places on the Beaufort West track with more stops but the other track is tempting as it can include a stop at Loeries fontein vhpy The other plus point for the Beaufort track are more options to sleep over if required. Beaufort West would be an option if I can only depart Saldanha later in the day or Gariep if I leave early. If it is a nice day it could be an option to fly all the way without sleeping over, air time around 6.7 hours without any wind. I am planning on enjoying the trip so no rush and side excursions would be tempting vhpy

Here are the basic routes.

Image

I am thinking of doing the flight sometime in early October but that would depend on paper work and weather. Before starting the trip I would like to spend a day with the plane, flying around the area to get to know her and also to explore the beauty of the area.

Any suggestions?

Fly safe,
Rudi

Wow Rudi sounds like an amazing trip must be nice to be able to cruise at 130

Tagging along to see how your trip pans out...

What happened to your other KR?

Cheers and all the best

Hi Ant!

Yes, it should be fun.

Can push the cruise up to 150 but this is not a race!

The other KR is being fixed by Phillip, the AMO at Rhino, should be flying again soon.

Keep well and fly safe,
Rudi

Sjo cruising at 150 sounds insane coming from someone that cruises at 45, pure adrenalin!!! hehe

Lives of the rich and famous I tell you, 2 KR's never mind the countless other aeries but I guess someone has to do it?! :)

150 mph does not feel that fast unless you are low or in the circuit with a slower plane. I have been in the circuit with the other KR at Rhino sharing with a few trikes and that was fun vhpy

Hope to see you at Rhino soon!

Hi Jaco,

Sien jou by Rhino,
Groete,
Rudi

Groete,
Rudi

I have now decided on the preferred route.

The plan is to fly Saldanha - Beaufort West - New Tempe - Rhino

This will keep all the legs to not much over 2 hours even allowing for a headwind. Fuel won't be a problem and depending on departure time and weather Beaufort West or New Tempe could be over-night stopping points. Gariep was eliminated due to the need for transport from and to the airport that could delay an early departure.

The actual date is still in the balance, depending mostly on getting the ATF and fitting in with other commitments but mid October looks good.

Hi Jaco!

Groete,
Rudi
