Mizer Info??

Mizer Info??

Can any one give me some details and/or history of the Mizer (or put me in contact with some one who can)?
What are they like to fly?
There are 23 on the SA register and they appear to be either MkIIA or MkIIIs. What are the differences between the two?
The highest serial number on the register is 327 so I assume there must have been a few hundred manufactured. Any idea of what happened to the rest?

Piet sold it some years back I think, but he very partial to it. Pieter de Necker at 011 7935235

There were couple for sale some time back (check Junk Mail :shock: ). Think 1 in CT and 1 in Middleburg? Was 1 at EAA 2-3 years ago with nice sticker.

Thanks for the tip. I had a very interesting discussion with Piet de Necker. I can see why he is held in such high esteem by the flying community. The Mizers were hand made and it is unlikely that any two are exactly alike. The manufacturer is no longer in business so support is a problem. He felt that plane in reasonable condition would be worth R35k to R40k.

Junk mail had one in Middleburg for R40K. One at EAA some time ago was I think R60K :wink:

The plane has two what look, to my uneducated eyes, very larg trim tabs on the elevator. With two of us (both about 85 - 90kg) it still required a lot of back pressure on the stick to keep her level with both fully set. Why would a plane need so much trim and what could be done to correct it??

I phoned Bert and we talked for almost an hour. What a mine of information. He has not made any planes for a while but can still supply parts and has moulds for the spats and cockpit fairing. He origionaly designed and made a plane for himself whit no intention of making more. He only started manufacturing them when other people showed interest. About 30 were made of which 23 are still registered. He also made a trike that eliminates the "duck walk" problem. I have invited Bert to join the forum and hope he does.

Regarding my question about the trim tabs. The origional trim was by moving a bungi cord up the joy stick. If I understood Bert correctly neutral trim would be a 80 kg pilot one up with a full fuel load. Two up does make it nose heavy but the passenger seat can be moved back to compensate. The current adjustable trim was not a standard fitting.

Searched for "Mizer" and then found this, your post.

With regards to the large trim tabs:

I've flown WOG now for at least six months, mostly two up at the highveld. Many days, because of wind & turbulance, I was the only one flying for the day from where I operate from. Yes, it definitely requires trim changes depending on all up weight, but I can trim it perfectly to fly hands off under any configuration.

What I can & will say about the Mizers: It's most probably the closest to a real aircraft that can be had for under R50k. Yes, they run a little longer and climb a little slower than the trikes or i.e. skyfoxes, but then this is one heck of a solid built aircraft. (I might soon fit a Powerfin prop on mine which I firmly believe will improve this a lot!) They handle turbulance with ease (I suspect the flaperons hanging in the high pressure area below the wing to be the cause for this) and will easily cruise 65-75mph depending on the configuration. a Top speed of 80-85mph is atainable. They will accommodate two BIG adults without being uncomfortable at all.

As you know I'm thinking of upgrading once again. However, should I fail to secure a better deal soon, I'll revamp mine & invite you to come fly with me. I would have done this long ago, but the required funds eluded me.
