its a bantam moron.... theres time for everything, patch or not....
Yea When Dish says he is Belting down the runway that means he has time to make a coffee and then still let it cool before he drinks it in time to pull up for the power lines at the end of the runway.

Best company when going through serious bumps is ZZ Top. :)

It is a psycological thing!!!
Personally I prefer to concentrate on my flying and views to be enjoyed.
I do think that it is adviceable not to allow your attention to be taken up by music.
The pilots who do listen to music when they fly are unknowingly using the music to calm them down and hide their fear. The music tells them" You,re cool man"
Those who dont listen to music while they fly understand the dangers better, they need no 'medisyn' to calm them down and they are probably the better pilots.!!!
Think about this and decide for yourselves if you want to listen to music while you are doing a 20 min flight in the GF.???

Has there ever been an accident caused by the pilot listening to music?

Those that suggest that it can make you a less safer pilot - then I would enter a suggestion that talking on your radio could equally be as hazardous. Studies of people using cell phones whilst driving - have sometimes shown the driver not being able to recount any of what they saw whilst driving and talking. So talking on your radio is not that far away from cell phone use whilst driving.

It would also have to follow that lisetening to music at any time you are performing a task (like driving, operating machinery) could also be dangerous.

Skybound, I can assure you that flying on the phone is not the same as driving, I have tested phones in the air and many types for many hours and have concluded with the result that we dont support phones on comms systems. In a trike you have a tendency to pull the bar backwards. Fix wing pull the stick back. I actually almost had a mid air with Dave Jackson a while back whilst testing the iPhone and nearly stalled doing it. So the answer in my tried and tested opinion and speak with authority as I have tested comms sets in the thousands now. Music yes as long as it mutes. Phones not a good idea... A low hour pilot forget it completely, music is just perfect, especially over the ocean and heavy rock...But each to his own...I had my little iPod nano swiped and that was good as it has a radio as well.
Centrifugal force in pure Physics does not exist, however this does not apply to Taxi drivers..

I can definately say that when i fly with music it is not blasting in my ears, rather it is playing softly in the background.
When something happens (Like your engine loosing power due to a blockage in the tank   ) i shut everything out, just ask the guys how quiet i go when i have to concentrate.

Thanks ZULU1 - the point I was trying to make is that the suggestion of listening to music will make you a less safe pilot - has no basis.

It's like driving a car and each person has different ways of working... I for one do not listen to music when I ride my bike but find I start thinking about all sorts of other rubbish which is just as bad! the nice thing about music is you can turn it off... I would not have it on when taking off or landing but when one is doing a cross country it can make nice for some back ground sound! & it's better then having a pax sing.

I have not used music yet on my trike but am going to try it soon.

This is an interesting one.... no real right or wrong answer, but I tend to agree with The Dish.

Music tends to distract me personally. Being an ex musician, I tend to get a little too deep in the music  .... but that's just me. Others out there are different. When I fly...I'm flying, and I dont like distractions while I'm doing this. To me I find the the wind noise and quiet purring sound behind me quite comforting actually.

1: Windnoise means Im moving forward through the air (^^) AIRSPEED vhpy
2: That quiet purr means my 582 is still running!

I suppose it also depends on your location. In SRE area where I predominently fly, I dont think I'd get through a single song due to the volumes of RT traffic?? Then.... on the other hand, if I was cruising through the Kalahari where I might get a radio call once every 3 days....perhaps some nice Led Zeppelin, Foreigner or Creedence would be great! puff (I like old school 8) )

Each to their own I suppose? ^
