Who plays music when they fly

So how plays music when they fly? and does it make sense if we have to listen out on the radio? anycase? I know some systems mute the music but is it worth hearing it that way?

Good question...All AirMagic systems have the music mute feature with either PTT press or incoming radio, they have a delay feature thus allowing the pilot to think after the incoming radio call. Trouble is if you have a Vee rabbit and fly cross country it switches the music off "from a distance". I have been meaning to make this incoming audio mute switchable for a while as it drives me nuts with Cato Ridge telling me they are on downwind, base and final from miles away...

Simple question to the forum ? Should I add this switchable feature (bear in mind by nature I dont make toys with switches) or just remove the music mute with incoming radio call ? Any comments will be seriously considered ? I will retain the PTT press mute though as its handy to talk to the pax and also mute when transmitting.

When talking with a controller or in controlled airspace its not advisable to have the music on anyway.

What about allowing one to just turn the incoming volume down so it does not mute as such but is in the back ground just incase?

I feel naked if I dont have my music whilst flying. Probably comes from my first flight in a trike with Dire Straits playing.

I have the Buzzcom system which does mute the music during incoming or outgoing radio calls and also if talking with the pax.

@Zulu1 - would leave it is the way you have it presently with the small delay after tx/rx. Flying in the PE SRA - many calls, and it has not annoyed me yet.

I plug my i-pod into my Air Magic system. works well but ..... Johannesburg Special Rules East is so busy sometimes, the music can be muted for a long time.
Still a fantastic feature though.

Keep the Air Magic system as is. Would rather have the music mute and not miss a call. Works perfect the way it is

Hey Vatso, my personal view is that playing music whilst flying is tantamount to going to sleep with ear muffs on whilst your newborn baby sleeps next door!!

When I fly I want EVERY sensory perception 110% alert and not masked by any distraction!! I want to be fully tuned in to the slightest of variations in engine sounds, vibrations, radio comms, etc.

Also, I believe that music (certain songs) can take your mind OFF the here and now . . . . NOT GOOD!!!

I have an iPhone/iPod connection out of my comms system but would not dream of using it!

Anyway, as I say . . . . my personal view!

Music - Oh Yea Baby, nothing like your favorite tunes playing while you are in the air, i have them running softly in the background as i do not want to drain out the sounds from outside e.g. motor, windnoise, my pax screaming as i pass through the second spiral dive that sort of thing

I get to listen to music as call comes in it mutes when call finished it comes back. NOTHING wrong with that

I only kill the music for handings that are hairy like Tuesdays arrival - Tried twice before doing a downwind landing just so that i could get down onto the ground.

Not enough time to listen to music when flying around the patch

A lot of my flying is done by "feeling" and "listening" - being intimately involved with the plane.... that may or may not make sense but in my mind, if i want to listen to music, i will do it some other time.... when im flying, I want to hear the engine, and even the slightest drop / increase in revs (caused by me) I want to hear and feel whats going on, radio calls etc... the other thing is i would get PISSED off listening to a song, having it mute, having it come back, having it mute etc.... naaa, just not for me.... have often thought of doing a low level beat up to the beautiful sound of pavarottis "nessum dorma" as i belt down the runway..... decided to leave that to the commentators and DJ's at airshows.... the last airshow i was at one of SAA's pilots flew the a 340 past, low level, and to the immaculately timed above mentioned tune... gave me goosebumps, BUT that is where it will stay - (for me anyway)

Most okes will differ on the subject and thats great.... just my 2 cents
