Thursday is D-day!! ZU-DLP is coming home!

Postby Asterix » Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:24 pm

Oh, how I have pined for this day! I trailered her down to Microland on 29 January from Crosswinds. (I must say, I enjoyed the stares from the people overtaking me on the highway - eat your hearts out you earthbound misfits!  )

Thursday will be 2 days short of three months. The waiting has been agonizing. Although I bought this trike in perfectly flyable condition, (with a lot of love poured over her by Nacho, previous owner), I just wanted things to be PERFECT! ( 2004 model, 300 hours on the clock, and she is moving to Polokwane - FAR away from spares, services etc...)

300 hour Rotax 582 service,(two hours early), including full de-coke, crank inspection etc - DONE!

Rebuild Spirit 15 Wing with new sail / wires / etc. - DONE!

Full airframe disassembly and rebuild with new parts on all slightly worn components, including some major new components, bearings, bushings, rubbers, etc etc - DONE!

Gentlemen - I have a NEW Cobra! vhpy vhpy vhpy ( I love keeping older trikes alive - a trade not well-known at Microland! )

The trepidation now kicks in..  I can pre-flight Geel Kerneels with my eyes closed. When I strap myself into his seat - it is like putting on my clothes. I know and anticipate every little thing he throws at me, from take-off, through turbulence, right down to landing him in a serious crosswind, or in a sojaboon land, or on the shores of Leeupan. I understand him, and he understands me! ##

Now.. we start from scratch...

My (actual) point on this topic, other than sharing my excitement, is the following:

Having read through some accident reports on WCM's from the UK, it is quite amazing to read something along the lines of: "Total hours - 1000. Hours on type: 50. Fatalities: 1"

So.. I have to be VERY aware of the fact that this is NOT Geel Kerneels. I have to treat this trike in the same way I treated Geel Kerneels way back when - when I was learning to fly for the first time, and being just a little bit afraid of him .

I must not be complacent, thinking of it as "just another flight in my trusty old companion."

My brother-in-law, who have spent 50 + hours in the back of Geel Kerneels, was very excited to hear that I will be flying ZU-DLP down to the farm this weekend. I burst his bubble when I informed him that I will NOT be flying an extra helmet and headset.

I look forward to this long-weekend. I hope for wonderful weather. But I will be using that weather to get to know the Cobra - circuits, circuits, circuits. 1500 ft agl steep turns / stalls, LEARNING, like in the training days.

I will NOT take a pax in this trike, before I can:

1. Pre-flight her with my eyes closed;

2. Feel like I am putting on an old well-worn jacket, every time I jump into the cockpit.

Those who think she is pretty, will just have to watch her from below, for now. The two of us have to share some hairy moments first, and build a working relationship! ## ##

Yes ,I checked your wing and Under carriage at Rainbow early this week.

Very nice wing fabric and color choice.
I also used to fly a yellow Aquilla and when upgraded wanted a yellow cobra. I spotted Willie's (Nacho's)cobra a couple of years ago but she never hangared in my hangar.
I was very pee'd off but after a year and half a finally found my cobra. Although she's metallic gunmetal blue, I still love the aeries in yellow.

Enjoy her! You will, guaranteed. She will def perform up to your expectations and beyond. Just allow time to settle in with her first otherwise she might just take out her fangs and give you a nip,

Cobra greetings

Yes Triker - that bite... Walter test-flew her this afternoon, and reported that, although she flies fine, she is a bit heavy on the bar. Since you Also flew an Aquiila previuosly - what is your experience on the input difference between Aquilla and Cobra? I can fly Geel Kerneels with my pinky finger in smooth weather? Any inputs would be appreciated.!

HI Asterix

Yes you need more input for the Cora (with Spirit wing) because your undercarriage is more heavier
It something you need to get accustomed too. When experiencing terbulance she is like a rolls royce. Takes it in the stride

Good luck and enjoy

Did not fly this morning because of the fog.

But this evening, my Cobra is safely hangared at Microland, with fresh ATF, freshly serviced from head to toe - and as good as new! And conversion is done! (^^) vhpy (^^) vhpy (^^) vhpy (^^) vhpy (^^) vhpy 8)

Not without a few hitches - that "new" wing was VERY VERY HEAVY    in the roll. Always the officer, Mr Marius Nel stepped up to the plate, battled her to Petit from Springs, and after Jenya tweaked a batten or two - she flies like my Aquilla - only faster (^^) and with a LOT less worries from turbulence! (The difference in handling turbulence is all but amazing!) I landed her late afternoon on 03 Microland, with a 10 kt crosswind, with plenty runway to spare! (^^)

I would like to thank Marius here in public for all his help with getting the trike up and down between Petit and Springs, and for doing my conversion, and going beyond what was asked of him. Marius, jy is 'n "legend"! ## , ek skuld jou groot!

Also to Mike, Walter, Johan, Ria, Robyn and the whole team at Rainbow. ZU-DLP got the full treatment, including my paperwork being done for me - saving me the trips to CA and Raasa - and every bit of that airframe has been serviced. The attention given to detail is very heart-warming.

Also to Nacho for selling me such a nice plane, and all my new Cobra-buddies have had to listen to my concerns!!  (I'll probably be asking advice from time to time..for a LOOONG time! )

Wanted to take pics this afternoon, but with the tuning on the wing and the conversion needing to be done and day-light running out there just wasn't time.!

I am a happy camper! vhpy vhpy

Just a few observations - speedwise - from my flying today - (remember it was turbulent and I didn't want to "push" it , being a "newbie"!

IAS on the nice steam gauge ( I LOVE the old-world look of my panel, nice round little faces with needles - and backlighting! ## s023 )

Totally hands of, revs at 5000 - 55 - 60 mph.

Bar in a little as I put my weight down on it - 65mph

Pulling some bar (I did not go "all the way"), over 70 mph quickly , and I can see that she would not have a problem going to 80 mph.

For a good looking trike with a 582 - I am quite satisfied. Now, when the actuator is fitted later on, I think I am gonna cruise nicely, at 75 - 80 mph. For now - I am VERY happy. ($$) ($$)

The actuator will allow you to maintain that higher speed without too much pilot input if I understand its purpose correctly? What is the VNE of the Cobra James? Just interested to know....
