Thanks a million for this post. I have also emailed but would like all to think about the following.
I have attended the first line maintenance course which one must have to do the heavy maintenance. It took 2 years before i could do it.
After the course I decoked the motor and overhauled the carburettors. I change a spark plug cap as the impedance was out of spec and knew how to test the magneto and coils. It really helped me to understand the motor and wiring. Maintaining my own motor has not only been satisfying but also gave me peace of mind.

We now have 500 hours and the spec is still way within the limit.

I have need to do the heavy maint. to get to the crank and its measurments on 600 hours.

It has been two years now trying to get on the heavy maint.

Think as i then quote "Comet has indicated that they will not be offering any more courses in the future if there's not enough interest this time round"

If you going for the first line maint. Go for the heavy straight after as i so would like to attend the heavy with you as we might never get the opportunity again. Yes there is a price to pay but in the long run when you fly you will trust your motor. ##

Hi John.

Apart from the obvious personal benefits of attending this course, what other benefits are there. Can they be used toward something else or are they stand alone courses. :?: Duck you can add your two cents as well. puff

Hi Freddie,

Not sure, as this was the line from Comet . . . . "Successful completion of this course does not necessarily entitle the participant to carry out heavy maintenance and overhauls of aircraft engines. The persons who are entitled to perform such maintenance are determined by regulations issued by the SACAA"

Cheers,

John

Perhaps a consequence of the current regulations where legally you still cannot do your own maintenance unless you (i) bulit the aircraft OR ii) work under supervision of an AP.

i don't mind working under supervision and thankfully have AP's who are more than willing to help. I would like to be an AP so this is going to help.
