Best paint for Aquilla wheel spats etc.

Postby Loco » Tue Apr 03, 2012 12:13 pm

Hi guys

I would like to touch up my Aquilla's wheel spats, pod, etc. (not the alu pipes)

What's the best paint to use in your experience?

Thanks
Ant

Ant I've always used 2k on my fiberglass bits with great results. Just remember that your prep is most important.

Hello thanks for the advice! (^^)

PS. what do you mean by prep, I was thinking of sand blasting them and then painting straight away, is there a special primer you have to apply first on FB?

Thanks!

Ant. I'm assuming these are fiberglass bits you are talking about. If so you will have to sand them down with 400 grit water paper then primer them with normal grey primer or grp filler primer if you want a better finish. Then you will need to sand the primer with 1000 grit water paper to prep it for spraying.

Dont sand blast them whatever you do.

This is a short answer as I'm out of here.

Don't use paint stripper either on fibre glass. Elbo grease is all you need.
I don't use ordinary grey primer. I get the primer that is used for 2k. It is an extra cost, but worth it. I would also mix in a plastisizer, as there is quite a lot of flexing on a wheel spat.
Good luck.

Before you work up a sweat, call Denise from micro-craft Africa. New ones are not that expensive.
The factory ones are not painted. The colour is added to the gel coat during the molding process. The gell coat is a whole lot harder than the paint and is more resiliant to scratching. Also, no elbow grease!

Hey Vern, can you expand a bit on this?.... we will be respraying DBP's "plastic bits" quite soon and I am interested to learn more... we have got an awesome colour scheme in mind and want to make sure it's done right... especially the Plastisizer bit.... (^^)
