Very interesting. Downside apparently is that the fuel injection system cannot run without 12v supply unlike he conventional 912S once started.

Mike showed it to us in the box....awesome looking engine...only 4-5 kg heavier than a 912S but an extra 20-25hp...
??? All the press releases keep it pegged at 100hp?

I smell a serious rat with those economy figures...

Firstly, by book figures, the IO233 is more economical than the 912ULS, and the rest are about the same as the 912ULS. In fact, the Jab 3300 tends to use fractionally less fuel than the 912ULS, in the same airframe, not 10l/h more.

Secondly, if the 912is really is 21% more efficient than the 912 ULS, then the carburated set up must really suck - seeing as the theoretical improvement should max out at around 15%.

I get the feeling these numbers (if they are real), are taken under some extreme worst-case scenarios to try and make the 912iS look like it is worth the extra 45k...

Have to agree Justin... and what's more - the 912 uls is not the cheapest option out there.... At R 175 000 plus for an installation and recovering the cost differential of a conservative R 95 000 (Jab 3300 + difference + new engine) - surely would prefer then putting an 85hp Jab in with fuel injection and then using more than R95000's with of fuel to fly first :?:

OK - I just looked up the references Rotax used for those charts... They DO mix fuel consumption figures from completely different performance points - what they present there is a truck load of horse manure...

Just for a laugh, I used the same sources to calculate BSFC at 75% power:

O-233 (injected) = 0.27 l/hp/hr
Jab-3300 (carb) = 0.288 l/hp/hr
912iS (injected) = 0.3 l/hp/hr

Yup, believe it or not, the 912iS (according to the same specs they quote) is the LEAST fuel efficient engine of the lot! (NOTE: it seems the fuel consumption does taper off quite a bit below 75% power - it seems the 912iS runs substantially rich at 75%...)

Also, the published performance data shows the traditional ~3%/1000ft decrease in max power - the same as every other N/A engine out there...

A Jab 2200 (85hp) with a locally developed fuel injection system seems to a more viable option... but there are those with different taste and options!

So what's it gonna cost for the whole Rotax engine package - R 250 000?

So as per my question on Avcom - what is the benefit of this engine?

Heavier, more expensive, totally reliant on the alternators charging / a battery to run the injection system and the fuel efficiency figures doubtful
