Running a Motor after standing for a Loong Period

Postby Tailspin » Wed Feb 22, 2012 10:35 am

Hi All

What are the procedures for running a motor that has been standing for a Long period of time :?:
The motor starts and it did run with big smoke plumes the first time, I just want to make sure i do not hurt the motor as i would K@K myself if I make a stupid mistake and do damage to a low hour motor.

I would say, give it a run in as per newly overhauled motor. The safest.

Hi "Taillie",

Bad news I'm afraid. :(

These 503's and 582's don't like standing. Bearings become pitted and the engine will fail in less than 10 hours.

Have seen this too many times.

Only good for a swamp boat without a rebuild.

Regards
John

Hi Tailspin
The big plumes of smoke when you started it for the first time sounds like it was stored with hibernation oil. Many engines are stored this way after its manufuctured. Should be fine if this is the case.
Cheers

Thanks Johann

I will still run the motor in as per Manual.
But still needed to ask the question.

Agree with the smoke = good chance it was stored correctly. Would be usefull to check this with previous owner. Also was it stored in a plastic bag, in a place like Upington or in an open shed in Durban? Also how long is looooong?

If in doubt - dont. Get an AP to crack it open at worst.

Wise words skybound® except that I have seen uninhibited 2-strokes and even diesels cough out black smoke after standing. :|
