What Spark plugs !!!

Postby Bennie Vorster » Tue Apr 18, 2006 3:09 pm

What Spark plugs is the best to use on my 503 Rotex The ones that is fitted curently is the NGK DR8ES.

Somyone advised me to rather fit NGK DR 8 EA at around R55.00 per plug.

And just how long will these plugs then work.

Checked their website and:

"The best guide is the manufacturer's recommendation for your vehicle, as this particular service varies from brand to brand and model to model."

But anyway go to http://www.ultralightnews.ca/articles/r ... kplugs.htm

There are pitures and info there on when to replace

BR8ES or BP8ES

The BR help overcome EMI inteference with the ignition system and your radio. I have used both and haven't really noticed any difference, but then again I didn't have a problem in the first place

Plugs should be replaced every 25 hours, but I do know of people who only replace the the left two on each piston and then the right two getting an effective life span of 50 hours per plug.

Me, I've just religeously stuck to the 25 hour thing as the plugs are not that expensive. About R20 each I think.

Bennie, the BR8ES or BP8ES is the standard, recommended plug by Rotax for your engine.

The BR8EA will not harm your engine at all. It has a V-groove in the electrode tip and is supposed to give better ignition with a better spark flame. It burns at a good temperature at any throttle selection. The theory is that if you've been at say, half throttle for a while, and you suddenly open the throttle, it will burn the sudden increase in fuel/air mixture effectively enough to respond immediately. It's a special racing engine plug that's why it costs around R55,00 each.

I use the NGK BR9EIX plugs. It has a colder range and is also a racing plug. It has better ignition properties than the EA plug and can withstand fouling and leaner mixtures better. Just a little safety factor for my engine :D It also dissipates heat more quickly so the combustion chamber doesn't get as hot as with a normal standard heat range plug. The heat generated has to go somewhere though, so it is being transferred into the cylinder head where the radiator coolant takes care of it (582, water-cooled) :D
It also starts my engine quicker because the engine is inverted and is prone to wet-fouling.
They also cost in the region of R60,00 each

It's probably overkill for our application, but I feel better

The Agentman will know all about the importance of racing plugs :D

They're not available in SA. At least not in the places I tried to source them from :x I got them from the same place as I got the primers from...ie. imported from the USA.
