Lots of banter and humour

Try Vernon's idea, but you are definately not alone in your turn preferance, we also have a guy up here at Empangeni who also prefers to turn a certain way, cannot remember which, but at the time I thought it to be strange vhpy I have flown his plane (trike) and I felt no difference as to which way the trike was turned - the cot theory is beggining to make sense

Sorry, a bit slow this morning, I should have included it in my previous post.

If the plane is set up that it flies straight and level with hands off, bearing in mind that this will be a very small window, as the fuel tank level, power setting, pax / no pax will all have an effect, then I would expect there to be no difference which way the plane is turned?

Any other thoughts?

Woooohoooo ##

I think the cot story can explain this

I do not have a problem with either of the turns..I too am right handed (**)

With riding superbikes it was easier to turn left as it was more comfortable to lean left away from the throttle, turning right was ok,not uncomfortable but not lekka either because now you leaning toward the throttle arm..with trike the throttle is by the foot..so no problem...not sure if that make sense

Boom..try this next time you turn left...lean your body into the turn...so when you push right..lean left..and vice versa..you will see it will be much more comfortable in the turn...and don't forget to look where you going, that could also be the reason for your turns not being smooth.. ..like countersteering a bike, look through the bend, don't fixate..

Just my 2cents...use it,don't use it puff

Hey Bundy

Speak for yourself Dude

I remember flying a Raptor and could not figure out why it kept pulling to one side then instructor said, take your foot of the throttle and see what happens, Ahh she pulled straight.

to answer your question, IT IS YOU!

I hate left turns too, it is just so much easier to throw her to the right! I am left handed!

No, it's because your right arm is longer than your left........ vhpy vhpy

This weekend i did some serious scientific investigation into the right turn mystery. I forced myself to do left turns the whole time i was flying. And after about half an hour and a good 15 turns to the left there was no or little difference in turning left and right. it seems that some of us just prefer turning in a certaint direction. Spoke to my dad who has 11000 hours and he said that he too prefer to turn right if given the choice.

My mom confirms that I never fell out of the cot, but Duck's theory of my right arm being longer then my left may hold some water. After all when i was a laaitie my right arm did get a lot more excersise then my left and also had so much further to travel then the average guy! This may explain why guys like me and Bundy find it easier to turn right and for the less fortunate there is no difference!! -xX -xX

Hi Guys
In my case it is definitely an emotional thing. At about 120hrs I was getting so scared to turn left that I was not enjoying my flying. I tried a few things and it was definitely NOT the trike since other experienced pilots flew it without any problems. In fact I could turn right VERY comfortably.... so easily that I was pushing the envelope with steep turns TO THE RIGHT. .....but kakked in my pants on lefts. So having said that I went out and started from scratch on left turns doing gentle ones for a while and turning steeper after a while. This helped but strangely I have not cured the problem fully. Even in the fixed wing there is a difference ! So good luck Boomerang ,perhaps I am just a bangat or I wanked too much but I AM glad I am not alone in feeling this way since I was getting paranoid about my fear

Guys,

Try gliding turns (idle) to the right and the left and see if they feel the same.
If they do (which I strongly suspect they will) then you know its the prop torque you are countering. No?
If they don't feel the same then your machine is set up incorrectly. Speak to your AP.
[Don't forget to have enough altitude and do your HASSEL checks]

I'd be really interested in the feedback when you've tried it.

If anyone knows a neurologist then ask him for info. Remember some lecture where the guy talked about left and right sides of the brain having an effect on arm movement.
Same applies to formation flying...some pilots feel uncomfortable flying on the right wing but are totally at home sitting on the left wing.
