582 battery

Postby Kingsteer » Fri Dec 16, 2011 8:48 pm

Hi GUYS.

I have read the past posts on this site with regards to trike batteries. My question is can I go to a bike dealership like Yamaha etc. and get a 12 v 16ah - 18ah battery. Will this battery be god enough?

Cheers

Normal bike lead-acid battery will do the trick, but do yourselve a favour and rather get the same sized battery from a battery shop but ask for a gel-battery. Probably twice the cost but then you are done for life.
You get the gel batteries also at the BMW bike shops but for about R 1000.00. They are used on the BMW 1200's.

Please don't waste your money on expensive batteries. I have been using an 18ah gel battery common in UPS applications for more than 5 years on two trikes. In fact, I know of a quite a few guys using these as well - even on their 912's and 914's. They are well below R350.00 - I bought one a while ago for a different application - for a quad bike in fact. These batteries lasted in excess of three years. You get brands such as Yuasu, Portalack, Panasonic etc - will never ever buy those expensive wet lead acid motorcycle ones again.

Electronics shops, shops that sell security equipment all keep these gell cell batteries in stock. Starts my 582 every time first time. 18A/Hr is big enough R355.00 all inc. I used a Sonnenchein 36A/Hr battery for 11, yes you are reading right, eleven years in my other aerie. Lycoming 0320. It only saw it`s gat when the alternator tensioner broke, and the battery went flat during a Kalahari Bundu Bash in 1996. They do not like going completely flat. NO amount of charging will revive it. It`s replacement is still working fine!! vhpy

Haven't been on here for a while...you guys are paying far toooo much for 17ah 12 Volt batteries !

Try these guys as importers at R202, excl Vat for 17ah 12 Volt DC, have searched the country and these fellows are the cheapest as we use for military tents lighting systems. This quote was for 10 batteries 2 in a box but as single units probably still be much cheaper....brand name Forbatt

Moderators whilst at it, this forum which is very good has a sticky for alternate supplies, maybe make one on this forum also...
