Battery Replacement?

Postby WhiteEagle » Fri Dec 09, 2011 3:26 pm

I have replaced the battery on my Aquilla 582 (Original) with a Gatemotor/Alarm battery, the battery is a bit smaller, but have tighten the safty strap, soldered the wires onto the battery's poles so they are very secure. The Ah on the original is 4.8 (I think) and the gatemotor battery is 7Ah. It starts like a charm, am I allowed to do this? It costs 5 x less than the original and seems to be working better than the original and are readilly available.

Yes Agree with Paul.

Do not solder it I would suggest that you use Heat shrink to hold them in place.

Soldering can cause the poles to vibrate loose in the battery itself and then (**) (**) (**) Eish she not work

Noted, but what I have done is I have soldered just a bit on the sliding connecters to make sure that it does not come loose. Kept the poles cool with water wilst doing this. So think it will be OK. Have flown in the mean time and checked it again. All seems well. Just for the sake of interest, will the magneto's keep the Rotax firing when a wire gets disconnected? We had an old Stout bakkie on the farm, no battery at one stage, jumped it, after she fired up, she kept on goiing? I figure NO according to EISh.........

Hi WhiteEagle, yes, the engine will keep on running, so no problem there, however, if your regulator is one which requires a constant sink, read battery, you may well damage the regulator if the wire comes loose with nowhere for the current to go.

According to Rotax a 503dcdi battery must be a 12v/16a/h battery if it has a starter on. Why do you use only a 7 a/h battery?

I have a 582 blue top with electric start. It seems my battery also needs replacement. What battery do I need. Will stop at the hangar later to check the one that is in there at the moment but will give Spedick a call. Which is recommended battery?
