Density Altitude / Gyro Performance Chart

Postby mak » Sat Nov 19, 2011 2:28 pm

A while back I compiled the following chart for myself and think it will be relevant for most turbo charged Rotax gyros flying in SA. With the current hot conditions this might just be usefull to someone. The first chart is a quick guide to check your density altitude in the absence of accurate data. I know their is more to consider when calculating DA but I tried to average all of these factors. The second chart predicts your Vertical Speed based on DA and weight. The third chart will give you the max weight based on a required vertical speed (to clear obstacles). I am reluctant to convert this info into a take-off performance / runway required chart as this is very runway condition and take-off technique dependant. I know that these data will differ from gyro to gyro because of different rotors, aerodynamics, etc but again it is just a guide only. The chart is not based on the maximum angle and rate of climb, which is normally between 55 and 60mph, but rather on a comfortable 65 to 70mph climb out speed. This then gives you a +-15% safety margin for possible varying conditions.

Hey Mak

Great work , there is an application if you have a iphone that calculates density alt on your phone. Very nice to use.

Good instructors always speak well about all flying machines.
Bad instructors speak badly about machines they cannot fly.

Dankie Len,

Ek het vinning gekyk na DenAlt, maar daar is nog 'n paar bugs, siende dat die "change units" (F, Ft ens) nie lekker werk nie.

Would love a RV10 though...
