As a minimum MISASA is to stage an event per quarter in 2012. Have your say and suggest events or comments on planned events.
The first planned event for 2012 is
The MISASA Microflight Africa "Spoilt By Choice" Aircraft Leaderboard Shootout
When: 4 February 2012
Where: Tedderfield
Summary: Aircraft to be entered in categories of R100,000 starting at R0 to <R100k. All types to compete in price brackets. Pricing to exclude VAT but to include a registered aircraft ready to fly with everything needed to fly in uncontrolled airspace. "Best in class" trophies to be awarded. The idea is to have a FUN day and share it with those interested in aviation.
Shootout rules
1. The same plane can be entered in multiple categories eg add instruments to increase the price. Do you buy a more expensive plane with less instruments or a cheaper one with more instruments?
2.The purchase price at the spec provided determines the category.
3. Cost (ex VAT) to include a hand over price where a licenced owner can jump in and fly in uncontrolled airspace. eg must have registration lettering, ATF, headsets etc
4. A plane of that type must be on display by the person entering it on behalf of the supplier.
5. The plane on display need not be fitted with the extras specified in the specification.
6. Trikes, Conventional Microlights and LSA Microlights will all compete in mixed price range categories that they enter for. The idea is to deliberate and give an opinion on what you would spend your money on. It is subjective but a good guide to someone that whats to buy a plane. What do I buy and what should come with it?
7. The "best in class" trophy will be presented with a citation that will specify why the judges made their selection.
8. The Judges decision will be final once the Trophies are presented. Contestants may submit objections to the Ed. Members may debate entries on microlighters. facebook etc Members may volunteer to join a judging panel for a category selected eg R300k to <R400k.

Re: "Spoilt by Choice" Aircraft Leaderboard Shootout
Alan, this is effectively what the UK has in the form of "Popham" in the summer and in the Winter " The Flying show" at the NEC Birmingham. Popham is the fly in version with camping and other activities and its massive after having been to one. The French have the Blois show and even more spectacular than the rest put together the Coupe D Icare.
Unfortunately in South Africa there are not that many suppliers of Aviation equipment so it limits the number of stalls and other goodie centres. Even the standard air shows these days are lacking suppliers and most stalls sell the normal books and toy airplanes and so on. Its actually so sad that something simple for GA such as a "remove before flight" device was being imported. Crazy as we were making them for trikes (and now GA). This shows the state of aviation in the country. Having said that look at MGLs products as an example of what is being achieved. Hats off also to the Sling, Bushbaby and the Cheetah. Jenyas in there with the best as well as Jag air out at Cullinan. But is that really all thats left locally made ? Chrisnic make some nice Led strobes and who else is making products. Must be flying suits, windsocks, hangars, plane covers, training manuals, maps, GPS software and probably iPhone apps ? But lets see them and at the very least the manufacturers can network. A very good Rotax regulator is made by Amptronics, lets see these chaps...and also see what else they make as the core industry. As an example does anybody reading this know about Gelvenor textiles and what wonderful products they manufacture ? Google it and then decide for yourself. Yes Made in South Africa and where do they exhibit ? The Coupe D Icare !
May I suggest to MISASA that as well as the "shoot out" that is planned that other sections of the aero club are invited. Then they go round up the suppliers of hardware and attempt to arrange a lets call it "trade show". It will at least create an awareness of aviation. Hopefully give the schools some much needed revenue and this will spin off to other sections of the manufacturing base. I would imagine the Flight sim pilots would be a prime target market ? Lets see the kit available, round them up !
Lay on a evening function, and make facilities for camping. That is convenient for many that will fly in.
This show must work but it takes participation by all areas of Aviation. The magazines need to actually sponsor it as in the UK with Todays Pilot.
Tedderfield is a good site with the Airplane factory being there.
Regarding Nicos fly in. We may just come up to that area also next year.
Go for it. We will vote with our feet.
