Why is there no credit’s towards Gyro license ?
If you do you PPL you can get 35 hours credit hours from your CCM –“conventional controlled microlight “ credited to your PPL.
This means that you can do a PPL in 20 hours if you have done
- 10 hours dual which include 5 hours instrument
- 10 hours solo which should comprise of 5 hours Nav
Gyro training says 30 hours come hell or high waters.
Why can’t we have a more sensible approach ?

Before you make bold statements like these on a public forum you should perhaps ensure that you have the correct facts.t-bird wrote:Why is there no credit’s towards Gyro license ?
Gyro training says 30 hours come hell or high waters.

There IS provision for a reduction of 6 hours at the instructors discretion for the holder of an equivalent or higher current licence since the cross-countries are not deemed necessary to repeat. This makes it a minimum of 24 hours in order to obtain a Gyro licence.
Seems sensible to met-bird wrote:Why can’t we have a more sensible approach ?

Re: Why no credit hours towards a Gyro license
Still 4 hours more than PPL from CCM which is lower to higer license conversion.
Do you get credits for Solo or dual hours ?
I can refer to goverment gazette no 31932 20 Feb 2009 for PPL credit, where do I get the credits for GPL ?

Perhaps you should ask your instructor.

Gyronaut, aren't you an instructor ? Why not answering him directly ?Gyronaut wrote:Perhaps you should ask your instructor.

There's more than one interested in the question and you're the only responsive instructor. And besides, it does'nt become you.

Re: Why no credit hours towards a Gyro license
Ok, to those of you who are genuinely interested and not merely looking for a scrap... here goes;
I made a mistake (for which I apologise profusely) in stating that 6 hours is the maximum provision for credits - its actually 10. An explanation of my logic follows:
In December 2010 the SAGPA committee debated and took a decision to motivate their approval of crediting of hours to RAASA. The letter, inter alia, said, and I quote verbatim:
"Credit for hours in respect of pilots who are in possession of:-
1. PPL/Aeroplane or PPL/Helicopter or
2. Comm/Aeroplane or Comm/Helicopter or
3. ALTP/Aeroplane or ALTP/Helicopter
may be credited with not more than 10 hours in lieu of cross country training, of which no more than 5 hours shall be dual and not more than 5 hours shall be solo during their gyroplane ab intio training.
The decision however for such credit will remain with the training instructor, who shall notify RAASA in writing, as to the credit given, or refused, stating full reason for such credit."
SAGPA accredited instructors were informed of this. I set my own personal limit in credits for motivation to 6 hours for the following reason. The law requires 1 dual cross country and 1 solo cross country of no less than 90 minutes each (totaling 3 hours). My logic tells me that the maximum I can therefore justify is double that, therefore I set myself the 6 hour limit; (3 dual, 3 solo).
Following on from a question posed to the Assistant Flight Operations Manager at RAASA on 17 October 2011 with regard to WCM and LSA pilots receiving credit or not - his written response was "Hy kan krediet kry vir sy cross countries op die diskresie van die instrukteurs". (Loosely translated 'He can get credit for his cross countries at the discretion of the instructors') This, to me, means as far as RAASA is concerned, the credits may apply to WCM and LSA pilots also. Since RAASA is the designated Legal Authority responsible, I accept their interpretation.
I will ask the powers-that-be in SAGPA, RAASA and CAA to clarify this for once and for all and to publish it for the sake of transparency.
As for my uncalled for sleight at t-bird, I apologise.
You're right Tumbleweed, it is unbecoming of gentlemen in our sport (of which I am proud to consider myself one) to behave this way. Sorrie.
