Actually we do. We have a Catalina based at Rand, and the Seagle (the one you spotted in your original post), although not licensed to land on water in S.A.:

I believe it's ZU - SEA, and lives at the Coves near Harties.
Only one in the country I believe. Want one!

Thanks D20, bad choice of words, meant to say it is illegal to make water landings here!

Indeed a Seagle... saw it fly at the recent RV day at Kitty Hawk.

Pretty cool aerie, the cockpit resembles a small warehouse, you could almost fit a double bed in there! Climbs at a decent rate, and looks quite majestic once the gear is retracted. :)

It is indeed the only 1 in SA, and if Im not mistaken, one of only 3 in the world! The owner has really got something quite unique there. I wonder why they are not permitted to land on water if the aircraft has been designed to do it?

Are you serious???? Is that the only reason?

Ummm... what about the speed boats, yaghts, fisherman. Im sure they spread more hyacinth than any aircraft would?

The mind boggles sometimes

Sorry for late comment, but everything said so far is true. Rainer Friebose has assembled this Tsjeck design (spelling ? due to 40 degree in the sun for the whole day) at our club. Runs with a 914. Cruise not much morethan 100 kts.

Hangared at FABS, not Coves. Did land on the Dam when, on its proofing flight to Lanseria, the wheels did not come out and did a forced landing on the Dam.

Latest news is that he is chopping away at an old (not law) directive and will soon be getting water based operation legal in SA. Flew it yesterday at the airshow we had at the World Champs at Brits.
