choke or no choke
choke or no choke
I was told buy someone that when i am not going fly for a long time I should use the choke to kill my enjine to lubricate the enjine.I only find time once a month to fly and my qeustion is how do you guys think i must go about switching of and starting the enjine in my surcamstances to protect my rotax 503 motor.in the past i have used my maqs and the electric starter.I use bp synthetic 2 stroke oil.when i use the choke will it not be difficult starting the motor again?
Re: choke or no choke
Hi Andrew
I have found that if we are not flying for a long period then i kill the motor with the Choke. It does work but remember if you leave the plane too long it becomes like toffee inside the motor so it does have it's negatives.
When you need to restart if you prime the motor properly and you do everything properly then you will not have a problem when you start her again.
What i do is if i have not flown for quite a bit, i pull full choke and pull the motor ever about 8 pulls with the rope starter, then mags on and she kicks first time. I let her settle and warm up gradually and Bobs you Uncle.
This is not gospel but it works for me and the Pink Lady.
Regards

Thanks a lot tailspin. Will do that next time!
Re: choke or no choke
The only reason you would do this is to prevent corrosion on the crank if left to stand for long periods. The 503 motor unlike the 582, has almost zero possibility that the crank could corrode. I wouldn't even bother.

Cool thanks MorphMorph wrote:The only reason you would do this is to prevent corrosion on the crank if left to stand for long periods. The 503 motor unlike the 582, has almost zero possibility that the crank could corrode. I wouldn't even bother.

Will remember that in future.

Re: choke or no choke
Dont forget...fully synthetic is not supposed to be as good as semi synthetic for preventing internal corrosion.

Re: choke or no choke
When the 503 stops, both air intakes are always closed and there is no free air movement to the crank. On a 582 the rotary valve system will always leave one of the two chambers open and thus expose the crank to moisture.

Re: choke or no choke
Thanks Morph. That is one hell of an interesting piece of info.
Forgive my ignorance, but is it reed valves vs. mechanical valves ? If so, how do valves on the 582 work ?
P.S. Untill recently I only flew a 503 and never plied my mind to the 582.

Re: choke or no choke
The rotary valve is found on the 582 mod 90/99
The 582 doesn't get it's oil via premix with fuel, it is held in a small bottle on the top of the motor and is fed into the side of the crank case via the rotary valve.

I found this information on Preservation of Rotax motors might help you go to link below

Being at the coast... I kill the engine with the "choke"
Have a 582...

Re: choke or no choke
There is no choke on a Rotax. It had an enricher - an additional fuel jet to rich the mixture up for cold start.
If you 'Choke' an engine by blocking the airpath in the carb, it will suck neat mixture through the jets and swamp the engine with fuel (and oil if pre mixing).
Unfortunately the enricher will not have a great effect, but not detremental if using premix, but I would not recommend if using autolube
Cause the additional fuel may wash oil offf the bearings.

It is only a matter of speaking.... but yes, it is an "enricher"
But don't try and tell someone... enrich enrich start start
