THABAZIMBI BREAKFAST FLY-IN

Postby Wolfman » Tue Oct 04, 2011 8:19 am

Kransberg Vliegklub will be hosting an informal breakfast fly-in at Thabazimbi on Saturday 15 October 2011, to celebrate our upgraded "tarred runway".

Runway 15m wide tarred. Runway 07 = 1,25km long (displaced threshold) Circuit RH, Runway 25 = 1,5km long Circuit LH. Elevation 3200' and frequency 124,8

One of our members stock AVGAS approximately 8nm South of Thabazimbi for those needing AVGAS. MOGAS 95 could be arranged by prior request.

Come and enjoy the Bushveld hospitality with us.

Hi Wolfman,

Please post a few pictures, Thaba airfield as well as Koedoeskop runway, so we can know what to look out for. Are there any restricted or dangerous areas like open cast mines and anti-aircraft gun locations?

anti-aircraft gun locations
On departure if your bill is not paid. Like the spikes at car parking exits.

On the map I see Kromdraai, Liverpool and Mawala south of Thaba, and Rooiberg to the south-east. Where is Koedoeskop please?

I do not fly with a fancy, up to date, moving map, Google Earth activated, weather overlay GPS which tells me where to go. Prefer to see it on the paper map.

Anti-aircraft guns also needs to be marked on the map so I can sneak-up on them from behind to give them a skrik

Koedoeskop is 40 km per road south of TBZ. The Brits - Thaba road makes a T with the Warmbaths road. Lots of runways between TBZ and KDK. If I guess correct, the runway they refer to is something like Kumunandi and right next to the road to the east.

Hi guys,

The coordinates to Kumnandi airstrip where avgas is available as follows: 24 42' 37.6" S 27 46' 32.1" E

Kumnandi airstrip is the airstrip a little ways from the main road. Contact number for AVGAS: Kahn zero8tree 45ate too7sixsix.

See also map below with some of the more prominent airstrips in the area.

PS.. I wasn't able to get a picture of the AA Guns, I suspect they're under camo netting

EISH!!

Landings, where people are watching, are seldom good. This morning’s landing was one of THOSE scary ones!

We made it to the parking without having to repair anything and strolled to the clubhouse, only to find other pilots who also arrived on the planet in a not-the-usual-way! Perhaps we were intimidated by the near mountains, double-storied house on the threshold, the long lenses and the cross wind! Who knows.

The brekki was big and the coffee very welcome! What a friendly crowd of people at Thaba. Thank you very much to all who worked together to make this day such a great success. We hope the new runway will bring many visitors and help to grow your club and advance GA in general. Avgas (on this forum) also mentioned how he noticed older flying clubs which almost disappeared in recent years, started to live again and this one was no exception. Good luck and well done! (^^) (^^) (^^) (^^)

On the way back to Wonderboom we filled up with 100LL motion-lotion at the cropsprayers’ den south of the mountain.

What a pity the cellphone camera was not ready when we met a small group of vultures over the Springbokvlakte. One bird flew closer and it appeared to formate on us for a short while, perhaps to see what this yellow thing was. The Cub was too slow and the bird broke formation again to continue on it’s way!

(^^) (^^) (^^)

Thys you guys did just fine with your landings at Thabazimbi (^^) .. Always intimidating when you're new to a airstrip, and then there's also the external factors like mountains, houses on final approach to 07, a cheeky crosswind as well as lots of spectators!! :o vhpy

The Kransberg Vliegklub would like to thank all aviators who visited us by air and also by car.

And in reply to what Avgas mentioned: Thabazimbi is alive and well, and the Thabazimbi Vliegskool is also doing their part in converting "dreams" into wings!!

The Yak-attack was a huge surprise and crowd pleaser!!! Well done guys!

I'm posting a couple pictures taken with a "short-lense camera" :)
