Solo in the Sling, Awesome machine!

Postby Hadams » Thu Sep 29, 2011 8:25 am

Hi all!

Just my simple view of Flying this awesome aircraft!

As you all know, moving from a trike to 3-axis is not an easy feat, those Pedal things at the bottom doesn't "gell" so lekka, when you want to turn right it goes left! Until you do it with a Sling, yes the first take-off really is VERY interesting, but the Sling will just wait for you to compose yourself and help you to fly, that is all she wants to do, FLY!

Upper air work is "uneventful" to say the least. Once that baby is in the air she just goes where you want her to, just think about the direction you wanna take and there she goes, up, down, left, right, faster, slower, no problem. The landings is where it all goes haywire! BUMPPF checks, SCUF checks, radio call and trying to keep your instructor from wanting to jump out the cockpit is allot of "work" all in a very quick sequence! In a trike you at least have another 5 minutes to think of what you might have missed, not now, everything happen at twice the speed! But with the layout and standard instruments (MGL Thanks Reinier) in the Sling, everything is at your fingertips. Although it sounds like it has a small cockpit, to the contrary, it is huge compared to other two-seat aircraft. Check's are done and lined up with the runway and trim set (electric), what else!? Have i missed anything? :? :? NO! All to do now is round out and land! Once again, with the superb handling of this aircraft, all she does is wait for you, no problem! Round out, ok bit of a cross wind, right rudder, nose straight, look at the end of the runway, flair, flair, flair and she touches down! Your face light up, you can't hide that smile, you did it! She just sits there waiting for you to throttle forward and do it again! FLY!

I might not be one of the story writers or the very highly educated people that frequent this forum, trying to share my experience of the Sling is very difficult to put to words, she is that AWESOME. If you have not flown this beauty, please don't, it is going to cost you allot of money! At present, I have completed the empanage and is about three quarter with the fuselage and the build is really easy. Now, all I can think of is building and flying the Sling.

To all the other Sling owners and builders out there, I hope you enjoy her, and see you in the air SOON! To Marc, my instructor, thank you for putting up with me trying to find new ways of "killing" you! And of course forcing me to go SOLO when i thought i was not ready! (^^) (^^) (^^)

Must admit that although I dont think I'll ever stop flying a trike, there is a big part of me that wants to learn how to fly a 3 axis aircraft. But hey, I promised myself I'd win that lotto this weekend! Maybe I'll do my helicopter licence aswell! Haha

Well done Meneer! That Sling sounds amazing. Enjoy the rest! (^^)

Hi Tazzman,

i'm going with the Rotax 912 S, the 100 HP! As far as i know the 914 is the basic 912, the 80 HP with a turbo, yes with the turbo running the whole time it does create more power. just remember that you can only run the turbo for up to 5 min, then throttle back to normal, just to get you out of some sticky situation, other than than you run normal!

Now for nearly R50 000 more, is it worth it!? are you going to make use of it by fitting an in flight adjustable prop, for another R15 000 extra over and above the normal ground adjustable prop. As far as i know the cruse speed of the Sling has nothing to do with the engine, just how you might climb after take-off!

Maybe put yourself at ease and fly Marc's LSA Sling with the 912S and decide for yourself, i flew both and opted for the 912S, but then R50 000 in my pocket can pay for a transponder or storm scope or even a nice big GARMIN, but that is just me!

Mike, Marc or anyone, correct me if I'm wrong!

Now that is what you call a spanner in the worx! ## ## ##
