SPOT personal sat trackers

I will be getting one of these. A couple of hundred US. I recently travelled with a travel journo who had one and swore by it. In the jungle od SAmerica he hit the SOS button due to a medical emergency and he has a Special Forces team come meet him in the jungle... (they thought he had been kidnapped).

To me this is perfect, cheapish, small, light, uses sats (not GSM), plots a track so you are still findable if the unit is destroyed. Reliable. It has two levels of alert so you can program that a message goes to SAR or a contact. You also get units that can send messages.

You are right :( Pity as they would be perfect. And it is mildly annoying that there is nothing like this with coverage in SA

Hi Biggles, if you serious in getting a second option, visit http://www.vfrplanner.co.za and view the tracker section. This is based on GSM technology and it works. Although not compatible with all mobile phones, get the junkmail, buy a Nokia N95 (maybe 800 bucks) and pay-as-you-go, R100 will last you a year+ With this combination it does not miss a beat. Rudi G flew with this combination from Plet to Springs tracking every 2 minute (see pic on site). It has an airfield directory and sms function to send your position and more...

Cheers, Sias

I will do that. Its just a pity it is GSM. You will be surprised where there is no cel reception once you are out of the usual areas... I did a precautionary on a beach up the west coast once, and with no functioning PTT, and no cel coverage I was v.happy when the engine started.
