Topless Wing

Postby alanmack » Wed Mar 29, 2006 12:31 pm

I believe that I have the first topless wing registered and manufactured in SA.

It is a wonderful wing that has exceeded my expectations. I found it to also be fuel efficient with my trike having used significantly less fuel (15% plus) over a three hour flight than the fuel used by buddies with identical trikes except for the wing. The wing was manufactured by Jenya Zozulya with a large part of the components having been imported. See www.aerossa.co.za

My trike will be hangared at Microland in a few weeks time for about a week before I take it back to the coast where it will be hangared at Emoyeni for a few months. If you have an interest in the wing I would be happy for you to have a test flight. I took delivery on the afternoon before the wild coast gaggle fly-away and have flown it for about 20hrs. Durban to Port Alfred with wild coast flights in between.

Give us more information. How much does it cost? How does it compare for example to the Aquilla II? Will it be possible to fit on all trikes? Etc etc etc.

The following is a reply I got from Jenya (no mention of a price yet). Very interesting & am interested to find out what others think:

About the "topless": It is a development from our "normal" wing Sprinter 15 which we make for our US dealer. It is 15.5 m2. 80% double surface. Speed range 30-90 mph depending of engine and undercarriage. Stall is 30 mph. Light roll and pitch. Very good lift. Advantage of the topless version:
- less drag: better glide ratio, accelerate faster, less fuel consumption.
- less hight of the plane: possibility to use "normal" aircraft hangar.
- easy to put wing up and fold it down: it is possible to do it even on the trike. We started to make these wings (topless) at the end 2005. 2 wings are made: one for US, second for SA and we've got another 6 orders for the moment. South african wing was installed to the Raptor trike. It has flown 20 hours. Tested in various conditions. The owner's name is Alan Mackenzi (number given). You welcome to ask for his opinion of this wing. We are now in a procedure to finalize the paperworks for this wing with CAA. The Sprinter TL (topless) can be installed on Aquilla or Windlass trike without problem. Compare to Aquilla 2 wing it is difficult to say ( we don't have to much flying on that wing) but defenitely more lift. If you have more questions you velcome any time. We have got the Alan's wing back to our workshop at the moment for inspections and you welcome to come and have a look.
