Fuel Burn for Rotax 914
Hi Can anybody tell me what the fuel burn is for the Rotax 914 at full power?
Good instructors always speak well about all flying machines.
Bad instructors speak badly about machines they cannot fly.

At full throttle with turbo engaged it is 34 litre. I hope the same amount of poo your baby give you in a day

I know is this is not a scientifically verified result, but flying to Gariep recently in my Magni M22 and being 1-up, I noticed a fuelburn of 17l/hour at 5000rpm for long streches, flying at 28" manifold pressure.
I did a rough recon and this is very much in line with the total fuel burn for the trip.
Will check again flying to Alldays.

Mak, you are not flying a 914. In a Xenon with a 914, 28 l/hr on take-off, cruise 1 up 18 l/hr, loaded 22 l/hr. That's while using the best fuel computer on the market !

A simple way to get a good idea of fuel consumption:
Take the power (hp) and multiply by 0.3 gives you liters per hour.
eg. 115hp * 0.3 = 34.5lph
For something really efficient like a Prius, or new FSI engines, you can use 0.24 (instead of 0.3). But 0.3 will get you pretty close for just about any carburetted petrol engine...

Mr Vertical Tango, I don't trust your figures, I think you need to fly to Alldays to proof it to me
and if found to be correct we can celebrate

Re: Fuel Burn for Rotax 914

Re: Fuel Burn for Rotax 914
Mak, it is very simple to prove. You need first of all to know well your fuel tank, i.e. a marking at every litre. If your fuel computer tells you exactly what you have in your tank after a flight, meaning it is correctly calibrated, then you can trust 100% the figures it gives you in flight, unless the make you use has bugs !
The figures I gave are the ones I read in flight and after landing, I am always at 1% precision. Therefore they are correct.

By the way, the Optifuel amongst other things has an input for fuel injection and does not require then a flow sensor. I am thinking of the Subaru engines.

Re: Fuel Burn for Rotax 914
I have now also heard that the Magni , not sure about the other makes , have a return pipe to the fuel tank. I would imagine for excess fuel.
Now , if this is true, does the fuel flow meter calculate fuel returning to the tank or not?
