Port St. Johns flying and hangar?

Postby pietmeyer » Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:50 am

Hi Guys

I am planning to go down to Port St. Johns in July with a dive charter but would like to take my trike with. I would obviously need a hangar for the 7 to 10 days and also need some info about flying in that area?

Anybody flying there and know of hangar space available for a trike? I am planning to go there mid July and hopefully get to do some sardine spotting (^^)

Hi Piet
There is no hangers at Port St. Johns it self. Just a lot of cattle on the runway. I don't know of any hangers close to it.

From Google earth it seems like it is just a big tar runway and nothing else? Are there any special arrangements to fly there or can anybody use the runway? Who does it belong to?

Any microlight clubs close by or is it only that runway (**)

Looks like an amazing area to fly. Was it here where the PC12 crashed last month?

It is high on top of a mountain and for first timers the approach is daunting as it is a cliff face. There are lots of locals cattle wandering around and plenty of their landmines on the runway. Go onto you tube and search for some vids and you will see what I mean. Also look at the thread sEXY going to the USA and John Young has posted a pic of the runway there.

Cheers,

Andy

PC Xii went in, in Plett. Port St. J is awesome area for flying. Get hold of Veron he may be able to help. There is a strip or 2 on south coast, but few are open to outsiders. Margate is a bit far and I don't know if they schmaak trikes yet...

Vernon is still quite far from Port St John's but may know of some strips down that way. That coast line is awesome to fly

Port St. Johns flying and hangar?

Postby John Young » Wed Mar 16, 2011 5:35 am

Hi,

Here's our own Thatchman doing the Karate Kid impersonation on the cliff face. vhpy

Image

Cow patties just everywhere. Plenty fresh ones 24/7. Real son-of-a-bitch to wash off once baked hard from flying.

No hangers - no civilization.

So I presume it is not safe to leave a trike overnight :(

I am planning to dive there in July and would love to take the trike with. :(

Couple of years ago we took the trikes down for a week.

Just phone the cop shop in Port St Johns and ask them to arrange a local to stand guard at night for a couple of bob. They were very helpfull and arranged it. I think we paid the guy something like R 45.00 a night.

Tie trike down properly and remove valuables like GPS, radio etc.

Beautifull flying and an awesome approach over that cliff !!

Enjoy it !

Jean

I have no definite dates as of yet. The dive charter that we always dive with will be there for almost 6 weeks from June to July and I thought of going down for a week or so. Wanted to take the trake to do some sardine spotting from the air annd have some fun while waiting to dive. Will let you know once all is finalized

Hi Piet.
Port Edward is rather a long way off to fly a tike for a bit of diving. I think the idea of arranging for a guard to look after the trike at P. St Johns is a good idea. The closest to P. St Johns with a strip is grosverner. The same applies there, as far as a guard is concerned, but still a long way. I flew up from Mt Pleasant Near The Haven this morning. Dead smooth. The flying along the entire Wild Coast for a trike is unequalled. If I can help you here at Port Edward, Give me a shout.
Vernon. (^^)
