Wing tip strobes, need a glass blower

Postby ZULU1 » Thu Nov 25, 2010 7:52 am

My turn for help please, we are making very small wing strobes and I require a glass blower/maker/supplier to supply the small lenses that fit inside the housings. I know nGwenya glass in Swaziland well but thats a mission. Anybody know somebody who knows somebody that can help me out ?

Thanks Paul

Paul, send me the dimensions and type of glass you need it to be (pyrex or Borosilicate). Don’t promise but have all of the equipment and some of the skill to help you. Personally think you need Pyrex glass that is sloped over a mold in a kiln, this will give you very specific dimensions and thickness. I am not in SA at the moment but curriers only take 2 days.

Rusty, I owe you a beer mate !! I have contacted Sarel Rautenbach and the product he has produced for us far exceeds my expectations, absolutely brilliant product. It will be a wing tip strobe with a LED position light and a Xenon element.
This forum is brilliant...

Nicow, absolutely no reason at all for a high price, its a combo old and new tech xenon (high bright) in a small package with LED around the inside. All materials are local and the biggest cost for another manufacturer would be the heat sink. We are going to cast ours as the foundry is next door. Main issue is (was) the lens and thats sorted. Another really good company thats helped us out is Swan Metal spinning in Cape Town who are spinning the housings. So there are some really switched on chaps in the Cape..The Xenons are used in toll gate indicator lights and freely available, Mosfets are used in vehicles and millions available locally. Hopefully we will see lots of flashers in the sky. I will run a forum special, lets get them finished first...
