Not sure who this might affect, or whether it is a generally known fact.

Air space restriction in Limpopo

Pretoria - Air space in the northern Limpopo will be temporarily restricted in the coming week, as part of the SA National Defence Force's border safeguarding operation.

The SANDF was instructed by Cabinet to prepare to employ forces in the land, air and maritime domains to effect national border controlling in northern Limpopo from February 15 to 23, defence ministry spokesperson Simpiwe Dlamini said in a statement on Tuesday.

"In compliance with the Cabinet and ministerial notices, an air border safeguarding operation will be conducted during this period... to enhance and enforce the authority of the state in the South African air space domain," said Dlamini.

He said all flights, including scheduled flights operating with this temporary restricted air space must apply to the South African Air Force (SAAF) for flight authorisation.

"No flights will be allowed to operate within or through this temporary restricted airspace without a valid SAAF Flight Authorisation Code (FAC) or a valid clearance."

No co-operation will result in interception or prosecution.

However, exceptions will be made for flights operating under special circumstances by prior arrangement only, said Dlamini.

"Effective co-operation will ensure a secure airspace without negatively impacting on the aviation sector."

Applications for FAC must be submitted to the SAAF at least 24 hours before entering the restricted airspace for the first time.

The SANDF border safeguarding strategy makes way for the gradual re-entry of the army to borderline control, within the context of co-operating with the SAPS, which took over after 1994.

The re-deployment of soldiers started in April last year, when 160 soldiers were deployed on the South Africa/Zimbabwe border.

This was followed by the deployment of 340 soldiers on the Limpopo/Zimbabwe border and a further 160 at Komati Corridor between Mpumalanga and Mozambique.

The KwaZulu-Natal/Mozambique border is currently monitored by 160 soldiers.

The ministry said phase two of the deployments would take effect between this year and 2012.
