Generic Starter Relay

Hi All,

I am needung some help. I have just bought a starter for my 503 that fits where the pull start is, but what I need to find out I need a starter relay, but I am not sure which one to use and where to get it in the JHB area. Can anyone help in this regard and maybe advise me of what type of battery I should use.

Hi Gary,

any automotive parts shop (Midas, etc.) can help with the relay, should cost around R20.

If I may ask, where did you get your starter from and how much was it? Is it the Rotax part? I'm also looking for an electric starter for my 503 + B-box ...

Hi V,

The starter is one I purchased from a guy who never used it, it is one that has a one way bearing on the fly wheel and is belt driven from the starter, similar to the one discussed here on the forum. I paid R3000 for it!

For the battery, go for a 17 amp hour sealed lead acid battery. Works fine on my 582.

Hi Gary, I usually get these things from Yebo Electronics http://www.fort777.co.za/. You will find both the relays as well as the switches under 'Components' -> 'Electromechanical'. You can order online and they post country-wide. I'm very happy with their service.

That sounds very much like the M4 or is it M3 starter I have on my 503 also belt driven through a one way sprag clutch on a trike with a 14ah batt,

I have some paperwork with it if you need any, the starter relay is quite small looks like it may have been off a motor bike...it was all fitted by P+M Mainair when my trike was built,

Pictures of my starter and the selinoid that should be able to see on the top of my fan housing.

Your starter looks exactly like the one I have and I am planning to fit it this weekend. How does it perform if I may ask?

No probs Gary I will go through my stuff and get back to you, it operates brilliantly with my 503....really spins the motor well...always firing up within a few seconds....I have had no probs with it, I do believe the motor is off a Peugeot car but I dont know which one,

The sprag clutch needs a few pumps of grease every 50 hours....thats about all you need to do once its fitted,

We have an agent for them here in the UK who I believe still does the spares for the M4 his number just in case you ever need it is 01257 450908 and its Eccleston Aviation...as I say its a UK number,

When you fit it make sure the bolts that clamp the clutch unit to the flywheel are not to long...if they are its possible for them to contact the mag coils ect under the flywheel and wreck them,

What a/c are you fitting it to???

Ok Gary just found the instillation instructions.....I will need to scan these to be able to email them....do you have any paper work with your kit...just to save duplicating and time as there are eleven pages.

Thanks for your help, I unfortunately do not have any paperwork regarding my starter and engine, I am also fitting to a rotax 503 DCDI dual ignition. My aircraft is an old Cosmos chronos cart with a Raptor wing...and let me tel you she flies like a dream. Just really looking forward to adding the starter...then she will be 100% As for the bolts, I am using the same bolts used to mount the rewind starter to the flywheel, so I am sure there will not be any issues with the coils...
